Corton-Charlemagne AOC

Corton-Charlemagne is a Grand Cru appellation in the Côte de Beaune subregion of Burgundy. Only white wine from Chardonnay is produced. The wines can take a decade to reach their peak, but they are arguably some of the finest white wines in the world. When young, they show some buttery notes of baked apple, citrus fruits, figs and beautiful minérality. With some bottle age they can also reveal some leather and truffle notes.

REMEMBER

BURGUNDY GRAND CRU: WHITE CORTON CHARLEMAGNE

North of the Côte de Beaune, the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru appellation offers exceptional white wines, among the finest Chardonnays of Burgundy. With a little over approximately 50 hectares, the Corton-Charlemagne vineyard represents, along with Chablis, the largest area classified as Grand Cru de Bourgogne. The Corton-Charlemagne AOC shares the hillside of the Grands Crus of the Corton Mountain with the AOC Corton.
High and rounded on its three wine-growing sides, the Corton Mountain brings together three villages:

  • Aloxe-Corton: Climat Le Charlemagne
  • Pernand-Vergelesses: Climat En Charlemagne
  • Ladoix-Serrigny: Climats Pougets, Corton, Languettes

AN EXCEPTIONAL TERROIR

Among the most prestigious fine white wines in Burgundy, the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru appellation is characterised by its location on the top of the Corton hill, straddling 3 communes, and by its three different exposures. The vines flourish on very steep slopes located on the highest part of the mountain. This prestigious wine-growing hill owes its name to the emperor Othon, Corton being the contraction of "curtis othonis" (Othon's garden). Charlemagne, meanwhile, is said to have decided to have Chardonnay planted so as not to stain his beard. Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a white wine of great delicacy perfectly sublimating the terroir and the Chardonnay.

WHEN TO DRINK A CORTON CHARLEMAGNE?

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a wine for high gastronomy. Powerful and aromatic, it accompanies delicate dishes whose flavours do not erase its delicate bouquet. An exceptional wine that goes wonderfully with refined cuisine. Thus, the Corton-Charlemagne accompanies sophisticated dishes that enhance shellfish such as lobster or lobster with great refinement. This fine white wine also goes well with truffle-based dishes, fine fish such as monkfish or turbot, Bresse poultry, capon, sweetbreads, etc.
