Auxey-Duresses AOC

Vineyard of the Côte de Beaune

The vineyards of the Côte de Beaune, in the Côte d'Or, give birth to great wines of historical and international renown, including Auxey-Duresses.
In the heart of the Côte de Beaune, along the Route des Grands Crus, the Auxey-Duresses appellation is located between Meursault and Monthelie. The Auxey-Duresses AOC is a Village appellation of the Côte de Beaune which has existed since 1937. A former dependency of the Abbey of Cluny, the village of Auxey-Duresses is a place where vines have been planted since the Celtic and Gallo-Roman periods. The vineyards extend over approximately 150 hectares of vines classified as Premier Cru between Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Exposed to the East and South-East, the vines are planted on stony and clay-limestone soils, with a large presence of marl. The wines of Auxey-Duresses seduce with their balance and their aromatic richness. With their brilliant colour, the red wines of Auxey-Duresses harmoniously blend fruity aromas with floral notes. Refined, lively and rich, the white wines reveal notes of biscuit and flint. Over the years, these Premiers Crus of Burgundy gain in roundness and generosity.

FOOD & WINE PAIRINGS

vin rouge

DRY RED WINE

Auxey-Duresses red wines go perfectly with quality dishes and in particular with fine and tender meat such as veal, lamb, rabbit or poultry. As for cheese, Brillat-Savarin or Saint-Nectaire would be delicious companions to this powerful and robust wine.

vin blanc

DRY WHITE WINE

Auxey-Duresses white wines are a perfect match for river or marsh products such as pike, pike-perch or even snails or frogs' legs. In terms of cheese, it will perfectly balance the strength of a Livarot, Epoisses or a Bleu des Causses and even Roquefort.

REMEMBER

BURGUNDY PREMIER CRU

The Auxey-Duresses AOC is a Village appellation of the Côte de Beaune vineyards in Burgundy. If the majority of Auxey-Duresses wines are produced under the Village appellation, nine climats are classified as Premier Cru for both red and white wines:

  • Bas des Duresses
  • Climat du Val
  • Clos du Val
  • La Chapelle
  • Les Bréterins
  • Les Duresses
  • Les Ecussaux
  • Les Grands Champs
  • Reugne

The name of the Auxey-Duresses appellation may be followed by the name of one of the nine climats classified as Premier Cru.

THE LAND OF PINOT NOIR

A few kilometres southwest of Beaune, this Burgundy AOC produces red and white wines from the two emblematic grape varieties of the region: the Pinot Noir and the Chardonnay. The appellation is famous for its high quality white wines, but produces mainly red wines. Indeed, red wines account for about 70% of Auxey-Duresses production. True terroir of the Pinot Noir, the Côte de Beaune combines all the ideal conditions for the cultivation of this grape variety to be able to blossom fully and express all its complexity.

WHITE WINE AS WELL AS RED WINE: THEY ENHANCE THE MOST ELABORATE DISHES

Both the white and red wines of the Auxey-Duresses AOC go wonderfully with refined cuisine and appeal to lovers of French gastronomy. If the white is perfect with river fish or poultry, the red delicately accompanies quality dishes and in particular fine meat. These Burgundy wines, less full-bodied, a little more premature and above all more affordable than their prestigious neighbouring appellations, allow subtle and elegant gastronomic pairings.
