CHIGNIN AOC

A Savoie-Bugey vineyard

Chignin is a geographical designation under the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée Vin de Savoie. Situated opposite the Apremont and Abymes vineyards, the production area of this wine extends over 200 hectares around the village of Chignin. Subject to a continental mountain climate with oceanic and Mediterranean influences, this vineyard is renowned for the quality of its wines, mostly dry white wines. These are nectars in which the Jacquère grape variety dominates, producing light, delicately fruity wines to be enjoyed young. The Vin de Savoie Chignin AOC also produces some fine, high-quality red wines, whose aromas vary depending on the grape variety. Find out more about this Savoie appellation at estates such as Maison Adrien Vacher, Domaine André et Michel Quenard and Domaine Jean Perrier & Fils.

red wine

DRY RED WINE

Appearance: Purple-toned robe.

Nose: The aromatic bouquet of Chignin red wines varies according to the dominant grape variety in the blend. Cuvées dominated by Mondeuse reveal aromas of raspberry and violet, mixed with notes of sweet spices and pepper. Chignin wines also reveal notes of small red or black fruits: strawberry or cherry for the Gamay, and blackberry or prune for the Pinot Noir.

Palate: Red wines made from a majority Pinot Noir or Gamay grape variety combine suppleness and lightness. Cuvées made predominantly from Mondeuse, on the other hand, are more full-bodied and structured, with a musky or truffle finish.

Serving temperature: 14 to 16°C.

Ageing potential: 3 to 10 years.

FOOD & WINE PAIRINGS

white wine

VDRY WHITE WINE

Vin de Savoie Chignin AOC white wines go wonderfully well with typical Savoyard dishes based on local cheeses: raclette or Savoyard fondue. These wines also go well with river fish.

red wine

DRY RED WINE

Vin de Savoie Chignin AOC red wines are perfect with Savoyard charcuterie or white meat dishes. Wines made mainly from Mondeuse grapes, whose tannins have melted after a few years of ageing, go harmoniously with tasty cuts of meat. These nectars are perfect with entrecote of beef with pepper or a slab of venison with porcini mushrooms.

TO REMEMBER

CHIGNIN AND CHIGNIN BERGERON: WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Chignin and Chignin Bergeron are geographical denominations both falling under the Vin de Savoie appellation. Chignin Bergeron is produced on the same terroir around the commune of Chignin. However, the plots dedicated to this cru are planted exclusively with Roussanne grape variety, locally known as Bergeron. Vin de Savoie Chignin Bergeron AOC produces only an elegant, complex and fine dry white wine.

ENCEPAGEMENT

Over 80% of Chignin's vineyards are planted with white grape varieties. Jacquère is the dominant and emblematic variety of this geographical denomination. It is also the most widespread in Savoy, occupying around 50% of the entire vineyard. This native grape variety adapts perfectly to the limestone scree slopes at the top of the Chignin appellation area. This white grape variety produces wines with a pale colour, full of freshness with a light sparkling. The bouquet is dominated by aromas of white flowers and mineral notes. Other complementary white grape varieties are permitted, including Chardonnay, Aligoté, Altesse and Mondeuse Blanche.

AN AOC BEST KNOWN FOR ITS WHITE WINE

Although the Vin de Savoie Chignin AOC produces red wine, this appellation is best recognised for its white wines, making up the majority of its production. Revealing a sumptuous aromatic bouquet and remarkable freshness, the Chignin appellation is one of the highest-quality white wine AOCs in Savoie.
