mondeuse

The black grape variety from Savoy at the top of full-bodied wines

Mondeuse

Excellent black and white grape variety, the black version is the most cultivated.

In France, this grape variety remains in its region of origin, the Savoie and its neighbouring vineyard, the Bugey. Mondeuse was the most planted grape variety in Savoy during the 19th century before the ravages of phylloxera, but today this variety only occupies about 200 hectares, overtaken by Jacquère and Altesse, white grape varieties which represent 70% of the volume.

A late and vigorous grape variety, it thrives in vineyards at high altitude on slopes. Vinified on its own or combined with Pinot Noir and/or Gamay, it also produces rosé wine, but the red wine is above all the most interesting.

Mondeuse de Savoie is an excellent red wine, full-bodied and structured, with a pleasant bouquet developing with age and evolving on aromas of violet, raspberry and sometimes truffle. An admirable Savoyard cru that is very much loved by its connoisseurs.

OUR SELECTION

MONDEUSE
More information

From table wine to a choice wine

Savoyard winegrowers once took advantage of the Mondeuse's yield to produce red wines known as "vin de table" in large quantities. It could astonish the finest palates: vinified without destemming, it was left to vat for more than 15 days.

Fortunately, the methods have changed! Winegrowers have learned to optimize it as a varietal wine, knowing how to balance the blends with Syrah and Gamay. Finesse and surprising concentration of aromas: La Mondeuse de Savoie is at the top of the gastronomic wines.

Its lovers wait at least 2 years before tasting it so that the tannins take on a patina giving the wine suppleness. These gastronomic wines are to be reserved on hearty dishes for special occasions.

Look for vintages produced by Domaine de la Violette, Domaine de l'Idylle, Domaine JP and JF Quenard or Château de la Mérande.
