NEW WORLD WINES VS OLD WORLD WINES

In addition to wines from historic producing countries, new wines are now arousing a certain enthusiasm among consumers. These are the wines of the New World.

NEW WORLD WINES VS OLD WORLD WINES: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

From a geocentric point of view in France, the expression "world wines" refers to wines other than French (wines from Italy, Portugal, Germany, Australia, etc.). In contrast, New World wines correspond to wines obtained from vines cultivated in countries where oenology has only been discovered for around 400 years.

In contrast to New World wines are those produced in the Old World corresponding to the countries around the Mediterranean. In these regions, the cultivation of vines and the making of wine are rooted in traditions dating back several millennia. Wines from the Old world include e.g. French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, German and Greek wines, but also those produced in countries of the Middle East such as Israel or Lebanon.

Geographically, New World wines appear in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and America (Argentina, Canada, Chile, Uruguay, United States, etc.). More recently, China, Japan and Thailand have also embarked on viticulture.

Namely, the know-how in terms of wine making was brought by the European settlers during the exploration and discovery of America. However, in addition to the age factor and the distance between the producing countries, cultivation practices also differentiate New World wines from those of the Old World.

EMERGENCE ON THE WORLD WINE MARKET

Previously stigmatized and criticized, the wines of the New World have met for several decades a resounding success on the world wine market long dominated by the historical producers. Resulting in particular from globalization, this phenomenon has had an impact on exports. In fact, the producing countries of the New World now represent a considerable share of the total world wine exports. The arrival of these wines was notably favored by competitive prices compared to those of European wines. In recent years, the supply of New World wines has even been relatively higher than demand.

A BEAUTIFUL EXPRESSION OF GRAPES

If the terroir is more valued through the controlled appellations in the Old World, it is the grape variety that is more prominent in the New World. The producers have thus succeeded in offering beautiful expressions of historic grape varieties imported to new wine-growing regions, in particular through single-varietal wines. Acclimating in all latitudes, Chardonnay is one of these grape varieties. Malbec, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc have also been adopted in these distant lands.

In addition to the historic grape varieties, New World wine producers also advocate their own wine identity. This trend is reflected in the emphasis on signature grape varieties such as Carménère for Chile, Zinfandel for California, Pinotage for South Africa and Tannat for Uruguay. The opening up of taste possibilities is therefore one of the advantages of the arrival of these wines from elsewhere.

AUDACITY THAT SHAKES UP THE RULES

Whether it is New Zealand, Australian, American or even South African wines, New World wines have shaken the lines in recent years. It should be noted that the cuvées from these new wine-growing regions all have their own specific quality, allowing the New World fine wine in particular to enter the prestigious court of Grands Crus of the world.

Showing daring and patience to achieve results, growers have spent years searching for the ideal combination of grape variety, climate, cultivation technique and production method. For example, in Australia, where no wine tradition exists, the winegrowers have to cope with an extremely harsh climate, leading in particular to irrigation problems. Thus, the vines are generally cultivated on the southern coast taking advantage of more rain and enjoying lower temperatures.

Not being limited by any constraints relating to traditions and by strict rules, the estates of these new wine-growing regions easily turn to cutting-edge technologies. In a spirit of innovation, they do not hesitate to resort to more modern methods of work and marketing. This has enabled the emergence of more innovative blends or single-varietal wines, arousing the interest of palates accustomed to European wines, but also of new consumers, especially among young people.

The rise of these New World wines is now leading us to rethink the notion of terroir outside of traditional vineyards. This success makes it possible to discover new expressions of noble grape varieties on so far unknown soils. In addition, the wines of these distant wine regions have allowed the emergence of new players and new marketing techniques in the wine world.

Always requiring daring, New World wines require a spirit of discovery and breaking the rules of tasting. This allows consumers to learn to recognize other distant terroirs.

Since the emergence of New World wines on the global wine market, their marketing has steadily increased, testifying to the enthusiasm and changing tastes of consumers.

WINE STYLES INFLUENCED BY THE CLIMATE

In addition to cultivation techniques, the flavor and style of the wine are other parameters that distinguish New World wines from Old World wines. It should be noted that with climate change, European winegrowers are finding it difficult to find consistency in the expression of an AOC.

On the other hand, in the New World, producers have dealt with the vagaries of the weather from the start, prompting them to constantly research the development of balanced wines. Focusing more on grape varieties, these winegrowers produce wines with pronounced fruity flavors. In addition, the latter have a higher alcohol content, a characteristic due to greater maturity of the grapes and a higher sugar content. This results from the generally warmer temperatures in these new wine regions. New World wines are also more full bodied with low acidity and a taste of ripe fruit. Endowed with soft tannins and a nice roundness, they can be often drunk in their youth.

In short, New World wines have changed the situation and are now gaining in reputation. Without speaking of competition, they help to broaden in the proper sense oenological advances, the commercial vision with attractive prices and consumer expectations in terms of taste.
