Thanks to its ability to easily produce wines of very respectable quality and a strong demand for exports, Chardonnay is, along with Sauvignon Blanc, the most widely grown white grape variety in Chile.
Planted in the plains in the middle of the Central Valley in the warm regions of Maipo, Curicó and Maule, Chardonnay produces round wines with exuberant aromas. Today the trend is to explore cooler areas near the Pacific (Casablanca, San Antonio), very far south (Bío Bío, Malleco) or in the foothills of the Andes.
Escudo Rojo, El Grano, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, De Martino
Appearance:
The colour is more or less golden.
Nose:
The Chilean Chardonnays reveal warm and charming scents of very ripe yellow fruits or exotic fruits, with sometimes intense woody or vanilla notes. Citrus fruits, white flowers and spices characterise the most elegant vintages.
Palate:
In Chile, Chardonnay gives wines that are rather round, supple, with flavours that express the climate well, sometimes opulent and generous in the hottest areas. Born in more temperate regions (Casablanca, San Antonio, Leyda), the wines keep this characteristic roundness but are balanced by a beautiful lingering freshness.
