Moulin-à-Vent AOC

The Moulin-à-Vent appellation is not only historic in the Beaujolais, it is also probably the most prestigious! Its curious name comes from a famous windmill perched on a hill overlooking the appellation. The wines of this AOC are still red wines made from the only authorised grape variety: Gamay. The wines of Moulin-à-Vent are vigorous, fragrant and heady. With age, the nectar develops finesse. Certain wines are aged in oak barrels, which allows an interesting extension of the range. Situated between the Rhône and Saône-et-Loire departments, the wines of Moulin-à-Vent are often compared to Burgundy crus!

SHALL WE TASTE?

Appearance: The colour of Moulin changes from ruby to garnet. The Gamay variety and the granite soils bring depth to the colour, such as purplish hues.

Nose: In its youth, ripe fruit aromas are expressed with floral scents such as violet, rose or iris. With the years, the bouquet becomes more spicy, complex and even develops notes of truffles, musk or game.

Palate: The Moulin-à-Vent AOC wines are full-bodied, robust, velvety and long-lasting on the palate. Depending on its ageing, it may be woody. With ageing, the tannins melt with finesse. A nice complexity develops to finally obtain a refined and elegant nectar.

FOOD & WINE PAIRINGS

When young, enjoy Moulin-à-Vent with red meat, game and soft cheeses of character such as Munster, Epoisses or Camembert. It also goes wonderfully with pork filet mignon with honey. After six to seven years in the cellar, the wines of this appellation are good companions to poultry such as turkey, for example. Try a Moulin-à-Vent of a few years old on your next Christmas meal. It will enhance, among other things, small dishes with chestnuts!

REMEMBER

SOILS AND CLIMATE:

The Moulin-à-Vent AOC owes its enchanting characteristics to the soils that make up its hectares, as well as to the climate, which is entirely conducive to the production of a cru. The soils of the AOC are rather complex, composed of granite, clay and sand. These soils are particularly thin and therefore very draining. This prevents rainwater from being retained in the berries.

The climate is made up of oceanic, Mediterranean and continental influences during the winter season. The landscape of Moulin-à-Vent has somewhat steep slopes. Combined with the abundant wind, this geography provides the essential elements for the good growth of the vine. This allows the vine to maintain an optimal state of health. The hedges are dried by the wind, which prevents possible diseases and ensures a concentration of sugar in the fruit.

AGEING POTENTIAL:

As a Beaujolais wine for ageing, Moulin-à-Vent can be kept for 3 to 10 years in the cellar.
