A sure bet for lovers of Rhône Valley wines, the Saint Joseph AOC shines thanks to its elegant wines with fine tannins, the result of expertise passed down over several centuries. Its history began during the Greek colonisation period. Seduced by the steep slopes of the Rhône valley, the Romans cultivated the vineyards. This appellation owes its name to a vineyard located between Tournon and Mauves. Known as ‘Vin de Mauves’ in the Middle Ages, Saint-Joseph wine was unanimously acclaimed by the great European and Russian tables, including that of Charlemagne, testifying to its exceptional quality. In the 17th century, the vineyard was renamed ‘Saint-Joseph’ by the Jesuit monks who cultivated it.
At the end of the 19th century, phylloxera ravaged the Rhône vineyards, including those of Saint-Joseph. The following century was marked by the revival of the vineyards and the creation of the appellation protection syndicate. Joining the great wine-growing regions of France, Saint-Joseph was recognised as an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) in 1956.
Today, Saint Joseph has established itself as a label for passionate men and women whose philosophy is based on a culture of high standards. Vintage after vintage, these talented winemakers, who are deeply attached to their terroir, strive to create wines with character.
