Saumur AOC
Saumur has been known for its wine production for a long time. The first traces of the vineyard date back to the year 515. Spared by the Hundred Years' war thanks to the protection of the Counts of Anjou, the vineyards have continued to prosper. It is also protected by the fortress of Montsoreau which controls the wine trade in the region. The climate is more than favourable to the cultivation of vines and the Loire river facilitated exports. Unfortunately, the Phylloxera epidemic that ravaged the French vineyards destroyed ¾ of the vines in the Saumur region. The vineyard took 20 years to rebuild. Today, the vineyard includes 7 AOCs, including the Saumur appellation, which produces red, white and rosé as well as sparkling wines. Whatever their colour, the wines of Saumur are supple, fresh and delicate.
