Moulis AOC

Moulis, also called Moulis-en-Médoc, is an AOC recognised for its diverse, harmonious and generous wines, due to its different types of terroirs and the richness of its blends. It is possible to find both accessible, ready-to-drink wines and wines intended for ageing. Located inland between Margaux and Saint-Julien, Moulis is not part of the 1855 classification. The AOC takes its name from the many mills that once existed on the 8 km strip of land that now makes up the territory of Moulis-en-Médoc. Discover this Bordeaux appellation with Château de Chasse-Spleen, Château Maucaillou or Château Mauvesin Barton.

TASTING NOTES

vin rouge

RED WINE

Appearance: The colour is intense ruby with dark reflections, indicating a good ageing potential.

Nose: The bouquet is complex, evolving from fresh, cooked red fruits to notes of vanilla, cinnamon, liquorice, violet, then to roasted coffee and tobacco. With some bottle age undergrowth aromas also appear.

Palate: The aromas and complexity of the nose are found on the palate with a dominance of fresh red fruits. The structure is sustained, the tannins are smooth, velvety and tasty. These characteristics make the wines perfectly suited for ageing.

Service: 14-15°C. We recommend decanting the wine only if it is young and has been aged in oak.

Ageing potential: 5 to 15 years.

MORE INFO

DIVERSITY OF TERROIRS

The richness and diversity of Moulis wines is due, among other things, to the diversity of the terroirs that make up the region. Three terroirs contribute to this diversity: the Garonne gravels, the Pyrenean gravels and the clay-limestone soils. The gravelly soils contribute to the production of fine, powerful and complex wines.

Suitable for both Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the soils of this terroir provide length on the palate, noble and fine tannins, thus ensuring a good capacity for aging.

The vines from the clay-limestone terroir produce fuller-bodied, more robust wines with good volume on the palate. The wines from this terroir have a good structure and have all the necessary components for a very good ageing capacity. These soils are favourable to the cultivation of the Merlot grape variety which brings fruit and roundness to the wines.

MOULIS AOC, FORGOTTEN FROM THE 1855 CLASSIFICATION?

The Moulis AOC does not appear in the 1855 classification. An oversight? Indeed, some of these châteaux would have been perfectly at home there. A great local notary by the name of BIGEAT wrote in 1866 that for him it was only a matter of time before Moulis was classified. In 1961, a new classification on the initiative of the I.N.A.O. (Institut National de l'Origine et de la Qualité) was perhaps going to be able to set the record straight, but this second classification was never carried out. Although it has several Crus Bourgeois, Moulis is the only communal AOC without a Cru Classé.
