Located not far from Bergerac, the Monbazillac AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) produces sweet white wines and syrupy vendange tardive and Sélection Grains Nobles.
These sweet white wines are made principally from two grape varieties sensitive to noble rot (Botritys Cinerea): Semillon and Muscadelle. Another grape variety completes the cuvées in variable proportions to balance them in freshness and liveliness: Sauvignon.
And over time they have earned a deserved reputation! Comparable to the Great Sweet Wines of Bordeaux, like Sauternes, Monbazillac wines can be appreciated at an unrivalled price!
These are white wines that are generally enjoyed for special occasions, or for the most refined dishes. Under their brilliant golden colour, they develop aromas of honey and exotic fruits. Monbazillac is a sweet nectar that everyone should taste at least once!
Brilliant and intense golden hue. After a few decades, it becomes amber. You can tell that it is very sweet due to the legs (tears) that flow very slowly along the walls of the glass.
On the nose, honey and flowers predominate in its youth before developing aromas of dried fruit, almonds and hazelnuts.
In the mouth, it's delicious! Fatty and powerful, its texture is balanced thanks to a certain liveliness often due to the presence of Sauvignon. Finally, the main characteristic is the "roasted" taste typical of overripe grapes.
- Serving temperature: 8 to 9°C.
- Cellaring potential: 3 to 10 years.
Foie gras. Poultry in cream sauces. Blue cheeses. Yellow or white fruit desserts (sweet).
Monbazillac is one of the great sweet wines of the Périgord. In the heart of the Bergerac region, it is exceptional: On the left bank of the Dordogne, a large part of the vines are exposed due north, covering steep slopes facing the town of Bergerac.
These terroirs benefit from the early autumn mists that favour the development of noble rot, that gives the roasted taste to the overmatured grape. A special microclimate that produces a special wine.
