They are made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Carménère, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot grapes. Several estates are Classified Growths, such as Château La Lagune (3rd Growth) and Château Cantemerle (5th Growth).

REDS

Appearance: To the eye, the colour of Haut-Médoc is an intense red: from dark garnet to crimson ruby, evolving towards orange tints.

Nose: Expressive aromas with powerful notes of black fruit, blackcurrant and blackberry. The nose develops a spicy bouquet: liquorice, leather and marshmallow mingle with scents of vanilla.

Palate: The aromas of the nose can be found on the palate. Harmonious and elegant, the wine has a powerful tannic structure that allows it to develop over time. A great aromatic persistence!

Ageing potential : 5 to 15 years (more for some vintages)

Serving Temp. : 15-17 °C

FOOD & WINE PAIRINGS

vin rouge

REDS  The wines of this appellation are red wines that can be described as powerful and generous. They can be served with both red and white meat dishes, and are particularly good with lamb from Pauillac or ceps stuffed with Bordeaux-style mushrooms. They are also known to go wonderfully with game and certain hard cheeses such as tomes or gouda. A racy and fine red wine that requires a few years of cellaring before it can be fully enjoyed!

MORE INFO

THE WINE-GROWING AREA

The region benefits from natural conditions that are particularly favourable to wine growing. The vineyards are spread over a succession of small gravelly hills, the famous croups made of a mixture of pebbles, sand and gravel, which dominate the Gironde estuary. The climate is oceanic, characterised by mild winters and dry summers. The light gravelly soils are perfectly suited to growing Cabernet Sauvignon. The deeper, more clayey soils are the realm of the Merlot.

THE WINE GRAPE VARIETIES

The poor, warm, well-drained soils are admirably suited to the grape varieties of the appellation. The Cabernet Sauvignon from the Médoc, structured and very fruity, takes first place (up to 80%). It is followed by the Merlot which gives the final blend its mellowness. The Cabernet Franc, with its lighter colour, contributes to the richness of the bouquet. Petit Verdot, which is not widely grown and matures late, gives the wine body and colour. Malbec and, very rarely, Carménère are also found.

EXCEPTIONAL WINES

Thanks to its beautiful variety of terroirs, the Haut-Médoc appellation produces wines of great diversity. However, they all have common features, representative of their region. Thus, we always find a harmonious balance, brilliance and generosity. The Haut-Médoc offers great wines, including classified growths. Their international reputation is based on their remarkable bouquet, their concentration and their ageing potential.
