One of the oldest grape varieties in the Charente.
Also known as Colombier, French Colombard (California).
This white grape variety is a cross between Chenin and Gouais. It produces a full-bodied but fine white wine. It is also one of the grape varieties used to make brandy producing the famous cognac and armagnac. After the arrival of phylloxera, it was marginalized in the production of brandy, but since the beginning of the 19th century, its use has been oriented towards the elaboration of very aromatic dry wines: the Côtes de Gascogne IGP, where it is blended with Sauvignon and Ugni Blanc. It is also grown in South Africa, Australia and California where, until the 1980s, it was the most common white grape variety, later dethroned by Chardonnay. It brings to the wine its typical and exuberant side with notes of citrus and exotic fruits. An invigorating sensation

IGP Côtes de Gascogne
Pale yellow colour.
Nose displaying exuberant aromas of citrus fruits (lime, grapefruit), exotic fruits (passion fruit), nectarine, boxwood and white flowers.
Pleasant palate that seduces with its liveliness and intense aromas. Light in alcohol. Its wines are to be drunk young.
Aperitif, savoury tarts, tapas, tapenade. Grilled fish (sardine) and shellfish
It is in the Gers, in the land of Armagnac, that Colombard enjoys spectacular success.
Aromatic and blended with neutral grape varieties including Ugni Blanc, Colombard is at the heart of the success of the PGI Côtes de Cascogne. Although the protected geographical indication exists in red, rosé and sweet wines, it is the dry white wines that occupy the largest part of production.
A wine exuberant in its aromas, it appeals to new consumers eager for frank wines.
Note that the Côtes de Gascogne PGI is one of the rare white wines to exist as en primeur.
