Vignoble de Savoie

Savoy vineyards: a unique terroir

Nestling at the foot of the majestic Alps, the Savoy vineyards stretch across four départements: Savoy, Haute-Savoie, Isère and Ain. Some 2,000 hectares of vines thrive mainly in the Savoy and Haute-Savoie departments, producing more than 20 crus, including white, red, rosé and sparkling wines. This region is distinguished by its Appellations d'Origine Contrôlée, which bear witness to the remarkable diversity of its terroirs. These include Roussette de Savoie, Seyssel and the regional appellation Vin de Savoie. Vin de Savoie white wines are particularly renowned for their unique character, accounting for around 70% of total production, while red wines make up around 20%. Rosé and sparkling wines, though less widespread, are no less charming.

A remarkable diversity of grape varieties

With its predominantly stony soils, the Savoyard vineyards offer ideal conditions for growing vines. The climate, which is alternately continental and mountainous, is also influenced by currents from the south and the Mediterranean. All these factors contribute to the production of a wide range of Savoyard wines. With its varied soils and changing climates, a multitude of grape varieties adapt harmoniously to Savoie's terroirs, giving rise to wines with distinct characters. Despite its relatively modest size, the Savoy vineyards are distinguished by their ampelographic wealth, with 23 grape varieties among the 250 listed in France.

The main Savoy white grape varieties

Although the Savoyard vineyards boast a wide variety of grape varieties, some are much more widespread than others. The most widely grown white grape varieties include:

Jacquère

At the heart of the Savoy vineyards, Jacquère reigns supreme, accounting for around 50% of the vineyards. Adapted to mountain climates, this is the most widely planted white grape variety in Savoy, producing fresh, lively wines. Used to make the wines of Abymes, Apremont, Chignin and Saint Jeoire de Prieuré, located in the Cluse de Chambéry, Jacquère is also present in the Combe de Savoie, contributing to the production of Cruet wines, and to the west of Lac du Bourget for the creation of Jongieux wines. Wines made from Jacquère stand out for their delicate aromas of white flowers, pear and green apple. They are often dry and light, with a crystalline palate. These white wines are the perfect accompaniment to local dishes such as Savoyard fondue and raclette, creating an unforgettable harmony of flavour. They are also ideal as aperitifs or to accompany light dishes such as seafood or fresh salads.

Altesse

Altesse, also known as Roussette, is a white grape variety that flourishes on the limestone hillsides of Savoy. Particularly suited to sloping soils, Altesse accounts for around 10% of Savoy's vineyards. It brings a distinct richness and freshness, as well as floral and fruity aromas to the wines. Wines made from this grape variety have good ageing potential and are distinguished by their elegance, complexity and capacity for ageing. Floral aromas, notes of honey and a characteristic minerality make it a great choice to accompany richer dishes such as mature cheeses and poultry dishes.

Chasselas

Chasselas, a white grape variety found throughout the Lake Geneva region, is used in the production of Crépy, Marin, Marignan and Ripaille wines. This grape variety produces discreetly elegant white wines with subtle aromas of white flowers and white-fleshed fruit. It gives the wines aromatic notes of fresh butter, dried fruit and toast. Wines made from Chasselas are renowned for their freshness, liveliness and versatility, perfect for a variety of occasions, from aperitifs to light dishes.

Roussanne

Called Bergeron in Savoy, this grape variety is grown in the communes of Chignin, Montmélian and Francin. Originally from the Rhône Valley, Roussanne is distinguished by its complex aromas of stone fruit, apricot and honey, giving rise to the Chignin Bergeron cru, a full-bodied, powerful white wine. Roussanne wines offer impressive structure and a rich texture on the palate, perfect with more complex dishes such as grilled fish and roast poultry.

cépages rouges de savoie

The main red grape varieties in Savoy

To make red and rosé wines, the Savoy wine region relies on a variety of grape varieties, including:

Mondeuse

Mondeuse is the emblematic red grape variety of Savoy, famous in the Arbin and Saint Jean de la Porte appellations, and accounts for around 12% of Savoy's wine-growing area. Wines made from this grape variety are renowned for their intensity, tannic structure and aromas of red fruit, black pepper and spices. They offer a robust sensory experience and are often associated with hearty mountain dishes, accompanied by charcuterie and red meat dishes. Mondeuse produces structured wines with excellent ageing potential.

Gamay

Although more often associated with the neighbouring Beaujolais region, Gamay is grown in around 15% of Savoy's vineyards in the Chautagne and Jongieux appellations. Gamay wines are light, fruity and easy to drink. They have aromas of red fruit such as cherry and strawberry, as well as lively acidity. These red wines are perfect for casual occasions and go well with dishes such as raclette and vegetable dishes. A grape variety that produces fragrant, gourmet wines, it is particularly popular when young.
