Which Wine Goes With Yule Log?

Buche de noël

WINE PAIRING WITH TRADITIONAL LOG

By "traditional" we mean the log made of a rolled sponge cake and butter icing. This composition is very rich and requires wines with fruity and floral aromas with sufficient strength to support the creaminess of the dessert. Dry wines should not be used here! They risk creating an unpleasant bitterness with such a dish. Vin doux naturels (natural sweet wines) are good candidates to accompany the traditional log. Among the different options available, try the log with Muscat-Beaume-de-Venise, white Banyuls, Sauternes, Coteaux du Layon, Quarts de Chaume or sweet wine from Alsace, such as Vendange Tardive or Sélection de Grais Nobles. These sweet wines match the richness of the composition of the traditional Yule log!

Chocolate yule log

WINE PAIRING WITH DARK CHOCOLATE LOG

For chocolate lovers, there are several options. However, it is not recommended to serve Champagne with a chocolate Yule log. The acidity of the Champagne causes an unpleasant contrast in the mouth and therefore does not match the texture of the chocolate cream. Although Vin doux naturels with cocoa, candied fruit and roasted flavours are a nice option, it is important to make sure that the chocolate creaminess of the dessert is not too rich. Some sweet red wines can create a heaviness in the mouth if the dessert is too rich. The Vin doux naturels that have aged oxidatively are the ones to recommend.

Tawny Ports with their nutty, roasted, dried and candied fruit aromas and empyreumatic notes are definitely worth considering with this dessert! Here are our Port wine recommendations:

QUINTA DA ERVAMOIRA – RAMOS PINTO

QUINTA DO BOM RETIRO - RAMOS PINTO

For a Yule log rich in cocoa, why not prolong the pleasure of the red wine served with the meal with a wine that is very tannic! Indeed, tannins respond very well to cocoa. The tannins themselves have cocoa aromas, especially when they are mature, which harmonise with the log. This is the time to bring out powerful wines with pronounced tannins with wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Madirans or Bandol.

Red fruits yule log

WINE PAIRING WITH RED FRUIT LOG

Are you a fan of bubbles? Accompany the red fruit Yule log with fruity rosé or red sparkling wines, ideally from the Syrah and Gamay grape varieties. These grape varieties are indeed very aromatic and fruity. The strawberry and raspberry aromas of these wines are reminiscent of the mousse or the glazing of the dessert. The fine bubbles bring lightness to the dessert to end the meal on a high note. Our recommendations:

RIVAROSE BRUT PRESTIGE

FRV100 - JEAN-PAUL BRUN

CERDON ROSE METHODE ANCESTRALE - BERNARD RONDEAU

Citrus yule log

WINE PAIRING WITH CITRUS OR EXOTIC FRUIT LOG

With a citrus or exotic fruit Yule log, go with sweet wines or late harvest wines such as Sauternes, Vouvray, sweet Jurançon, Alsace demi-sec or German Riesling. The acidity and spice of the dessert balances the sweetness of the wine. Moreover, this acidity enhances the freshness of these sweet wines. A demi-sec Champagne is also an interesting option with a citrus dessert. The bubbles highlight the aromas of the log for a perfect balance!

Vanilla yule log

WINE PAIRING WITH VANILLA LOG

With the vanilla Yule log, choose a fresh, light, sweet white wine with a light body. Rieslings from Alsace and Germany are excellent options here. A Tokaj wine goes superbly with such a dessert. Our recommendation for Tokaj wine:

TOKAJI OREMUS ASZU 3 PUTTONYOS 2014 - OREMUS VEGA SICILIA

And why not cider? Surprise your guests by accompanying your chocolate, vanilla or fruit Yule logs with a cider or poiré (pear cider). The sparkle of the cider will break up the richness of the dessert to form a beautiful balance.
