Discover Cloudy Bay: New Zealand's most famous vineyard!
Cloudy Bay is the name of two iconic areas in New Zealand: the bay at the eastern end of Marlborough's Wairau Valley and the country's most famous winery. The latter, created in 1985 by David Hohnen and Kevin Judd, covers nearly 200 hectares scattered in different sub-regions of Marlborough.
The vineyards here take advantage of this growing valley where the climate offers an ideal combination of very sunny days and cool nights. However, at the time of the establishment of this vineyard, only a handful of little-known producers whose wines had no reputation represented this region.
In this sense, the establishment of the Cloudy Bay estate has been a real game-changer for this area, as evidenced by the success and renown it has enjoyed over the years.
Today, these emblematic wines have almost become a national benchmark while retaining the identity that made them great: finesse, freshness and aromatic expression.
The core of Cloudy Bay's production revolves around Sauvignon Blanc (primarily responsible for the estate's excellent reputation), the remarkably intense Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, as well as small quantities of Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer.
But whatever the grape variety, all these wines offer an aromatic intensity and a freshness that make them unique: the Sauvignon Blancs are lively and very fragrant, with notes of citrus, green fruit or fresh vegetal (grass), and endowed with an invigorating acidity; as for the Pinot Noirs, they should be drunk young because they are rather invigorating and fruity, and have a pleasant vivacity
Depuis 1985, cette exubérance aromatique et cette acidité exaltante reste la marque de fabrique des vins de Cloudy Bay, améliorée au fils des millésimes par un gain de finesse et d’élégance.
Since 1985, this aromatic exuberance and exhilarating acidity has remained the hallmark of Cloudy Bay wines, enhanced with each passing vintage by an increase in finesse and elegance. In short, a well-defined and characteristic style, which makes Cloudy Bay wines a national and international reference..
