Alsace Riesling AOC

Also called Rhine Riesling, wisser Riesling, the AOC is composed 100% of the Riesling grape. It is one of the northernmost varieties that thrives in cool climates and is one of the most productive late white grape varieties. It is in regions with harsh winters that it expresses itself best and offers its wines a surprising aromatic palette. Resistant to difficult conditions, it expresses its terroir remarkably, and this with the most impact in Alsace, where Riesling AOC is THE Alsatian wine par excellence. In this wine-growing region, it is the grape variety that gives its name to the appellation: it can be found under the AOC Riesling Alsace Sélection Grains Nobles and Alsace Vendanges tardives for sweet white wines, and under the AOC Alsace Grand Cru or Alsace Riesling for dry white wines. It thus offers dry and sweet white wines characterized by a powerful freshness and a remarkable minerality. They are subtle, racy, delicately scented and beautifully balanced wines. Tasty and delicately perfumed with its fruity notes, this wine goes well with the most refined dishes. The best of Alsace can be found among these vintages created by Marcel Deiss, Domaine Trimbach, Domaine Eblin-Fuchs, Domaine Valentin Zusslin, or Domaine Schlumberger.

Shall We Taste ?

Dry Whites : Very fine with frank, intense and distinguished fragrances. Pale in colour with green reflections, the aromatic palette is a blend of fresh, invigorating aromas evoking citrus fruit (lemon), minerals (flint), white flowers (lime blossom, honeysuckle) or fruit (green apple, pear, peach, apricot, mirabelle plum, exotic fruit). On the palate, refreshing and sharp acidity that helps develop a balanced body and subtle structure in the wine. Evolves as it ages with notes of honey, dried fruit or sweet spices.

Sweet Wines : One of the peculiarities of Riesling is its ability to ripen slowly without losing its natural acidity. Grapes affected by noble rot (botritys cinerea) are picked late in the harvest, sometimes caught by the cold (producing ice wine) and offer an astonishing bouquet of overripe fruit (candied citrus fruit, apricot, white fruit, honey, exotic fruit) under a golden colour. Aromas nuanced by mineral or spicy notes. On the palate, the natural acidity balances the sweetness. Good ageing potential.
