THE VINEYARD

The AOC Juliénas is an appellation belonging to Beaujolais. It produces red wines made from Gamay on an area of 585 hectares. It is one of the ten notable crus of the Beaujolais vineyard which are, from North to South, Saint-Amour, Juliénas, Chénas, Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie, Chiroubles, Morgon, Régnié, Brouilly and Côte-de-Brouilly. The Juliénas vineyard stretches over gently sloping hillsides, located between 250 and 500 meters above sea level.

SOILS AND CLIMATE

The Juliénas vineyard occupies a vast amphitheater facing south-east. The vines benefit from the continental climate specific to Beaujolais. In summer as in autumn, the north wind is ideal to prevent the grapes from molding, but in spring it can cause catastrophic late frosts. The soils of the appellation are mainly made up of granite sands resulting from the crumbling of the "Granite de Fleurie" which forms the reliefs of northern Beaujolais. Poor and draining, these sandy soils wonderfully slow down the fertility of Gamay.

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY

The name Juliénas refers to Julius Caesar. Etymologically, Juliénas means "imperial wine". Passing through the region during his conquest of the Gauls, Caesar would therefore have had local wine served. Finding it as he wanted, he would have had it added to his wine list. So much for the legend. But in reality, the production of wine in Juliénas will begin long after the conquest of Gaul by the Romans.
