Whisky is produced by distilling one or more types of grain and is matured in oak casks. Behind every sip of this spirit lies a long, traditional process, passed down from generation to generation.
Three ingredients are all that is needed to make whisky: grains, water and yeast. The choice of grain generally defines the whisky’s style, giving it its distinctive flavours. Barley, which is mainly used to produce Single Malt whisky, remains the most common grain. Wheat, maize and rye, each contributing their own nuances, are used in many blends and other types of whisky.
Malting, the first stage, triggers the germination of the barley grains. These are then dried in a large oven called a ‘kiln’ – sometimes fired with peat – to release their aromas. The grains are crushed before mashing, followed by fermentation, which converts the sugars into alcohol. Whether single, double or triple, distillation concentrates the flavours in stills. Finally, ageing in oak casks – which must last for at least three years – allows the whisky to absorb specific aromas depending on the type of wood used. Each distillery refines its production process, varying the duration, the type of casks or even the environment of the cellars to create unique profiles.
The term whisky encompasses various categories, but blended whisky and single malt whisky are certainly the best known.
Single malt whisky comes from a single distillery and is made exclusively from malted barley. It reflects the unique character of a particular terroir and a specific expertise. With its more pronounced and complex flavours, it appeals to connoisseurs keen to explore a distillery’s identity in depth.
There are, however, other categories, notably Blended Malt, a blend of different Single Malts from various distilleries, and Single Cask, a rare, premium whisky sourced from a single maturation cask.
Blended whisky is a blend of several grain and malt spirits from different distilleries. This practice ensures consistency of flavour and a harmony that is highly prized by connoisseurs. This type of whisky accounts for the majority of global sales, as it combines affordability, balance and a diversity of flavours.
Spelling tells a story. Whiskey, with an ‘e’, is used in Ireland and the United States. Whisky, without an ‘e’, is used in the rest of the world, including Scotland, Japan, France and Canada.
Unlike whiskies produced in various countries around the world, bourbon is produced exclusively in the United States, generally in the state of Kentucky. This type of whisky contains at least 51 per cent maize, often blended with wheat, rye or malted barley. Usually distilled in column stills, bourbon whisky is characterised by its smoothness and caramelised flavours.
Whisky is now produced in various regions around the world. Each region lends its own distinctive characteristics, offering connoisseurs an endless array of discoveries.
As the birthplace of Scotch whisky, Scotland is one of the world’s longest-established whisky producers. The country is home to the largest number of distilleries in the world, spread across various regions. Speyside, the Highlands, the Isle of Islay… each has its own distinct flavour profile, making Scottish whisky a global benchmark. Scotland is also characterised by its strictly regulated production methods. To qualify for the ‘Scotch’ designation, Scotch whiskies must have an alcohol content of at least 40° and be matured in casks on Scottish soil.
Ireland is renowned for its triple distillation process, which gives its whiskies their characteristic roundness, intense fruitiness and lightness. Pot Still, Single Malt and Single Grain are the three main styles of Irish whiskey.
Although much more recent than Scotch whisky or Irish whiskey, Japanese whisky is nonetheless amongst the best whisky in the world. Inspired by Scottish production methods, Japan has developed a unique identity through a relentless pursuit of perfection and excellence. Compared to Scotch whisky and Irish whiskey, Japanese whisky is generally smoother and more delicate.
In recent years, France has established itself as a key player in the world of whisky. French whisky, which is often innovative, draws on local traditions to create original expressions such as Eddu, the world’s first whisky made exclusively from buckwheat. French distilleries combine creativity and quality, giving ‘Made in France’ a growing presence on the international stage.
Whether it’s bourbon, rye whisky or Tennessee whisky, American whisky comes in a variety of styles. Bourbon appeals with its notes of vanilla, caramel and honey. Made from at least 51 per cent rye, rye whisky is characterised by its spicy and fruity aromas. Filtered through charcoal, Tennessee whisky is best exemplified by Jack Daniel’s.
There is no such thing as a universal best whisky; it all comes down to personal preference. Nevertheless, the highly controversial yet widely followed Jim Murray compiles the ‘Whisky Bible’ every year and announces the eagerly awaited World Whiskies Awards, revealing his list of the year’s best whiskies. At Vinatis, look out for the award labels, which attest to the exceptional quality of the product. If you’re looking for a good whisky, don’t hesitate to rely on the reviews and ratings left by our customers.
Choosing a whisky may seem complicated given the wide variety of origins, styles and flavour profiles. However, with a few key pointers, it becomes easy to find the perfect bottle, whether it’s for yourself or as a gift.
A Scotch whisky from Speyside stands out for its elegance and aromatic complexity, whilst a whisky from the Highlands offers greater strength and character. For light, fruity flavours, Irish whisky is a must-try. Those keen to explore new flavours can venture into original creations such as a Breton whisky made from buckwheat or a Japanese whisky matured in Mizunara oak casks, combining refinement and smoothness.
One of whisky’s greatest treasures lies in its infinite range of aromas. If you’re a fan of strong flavours, a peated whisky with smoky and briny notes is sure to appeal to you. At the other end of the spectrum, fruity whiskies – which can sometimes be floral – offer a more delicate and accessible tasting experience, ideal for a gentle introduction to the world of whisky. Between these two extremes lie rounded, spicy or oaky profiles to suit everyone’s tastes.
Whether for a novice or a seasoned whisky taster, giving a bottle of whisky is all about sharing an experience. To introduce a beginner to the world of whisky, a smooth and well-balanced blended whisky is an excellent starting point. A discerning connoisseur, on the other hand, will be won over by a refined single malt or a powerful single cask. Whatever the taster’s profile, a whisky gift set – the perfect blend of elegance and sensory experience – also makes an ideal gift idea. For curious enthusiasts, a whisky tasting set offers a sophisticated introduction, whilst connoisseurs and collectors will appreciate carefully curated selections of Single Malt or limited editions. You can also surprise someone with accessories such as a tasting set including a whisky glass and its cooler, or a whisky carafe with a refined design that enhances the art of serving whilst also serving as a beautiful decorative piece.
