Warm and colourful grape variety with good ageing potential
Also known as Bastardo (Portugal, Spain).
Its origins are controversial, but Trousseau enjoys two favourite terroirs: in Portugal, where it is called Bastardo and is used in blends to make dry red wines and liqueur-like Porto DOC wines; and in Jura, France, where it is combined with Pinot Noir and Pulsard to produce delicious, fleshy, fruity and spicy red wines. Sometimes it contributes to the production of Macvin liqueur wine. It is a black grape variety offering intense purple wines, full-bodied, warm and which provides structure and good ageing potential, especially when vinified on its own. A grape variety that deserves exploring!
Jura

Arbois, Côtes du Jura, Macvin du Jura
Porto DOC
Very intense and colourful, Trousseau offers notes of ripe red and black fruits (strawberry, raspberry, blackberry), undergrowth, spices (pepper) and sometimes smoke. These are warm wines. They age well, although they are also very pleasant when young.
Red or rosé Macvins are sweet and full-bodied liqueur wines with a subtle and mysterious bouquet. Tawny and Ruby Porto are best enjoyed at room temperature or chilled between 10 and 12°C, served neat or in cocktails for rosé porto. Colourful robe ranging from tile or rosé to amber. They reveal generous notes of red fruits (raspberry, strawberry, redcurrant), stewed fruits (prune, apple) and dried fruits.
Aperitif: poultry terrines, pâté. Barbecue: Grilled red meats, duck skewers. Stuffed quail, roasted pheasant and other small game in sauce. Cheese platter.
Macvin : Sweet wine that can be enjoyed as an aperitif or digestive. Porto : Sweet red wine approaching the category of spirits due to its high alcohol content, you can appreciate it alone as an aperitif with meat or fish tapas (olives, antipastis, cod accras, tuna rillettes, savoury pies...). Chocolatey desserts
Why is it called "Trousseau""?
The name Trousseau comes from the way it looks. This red grape variety is " retroussé or "rolled up" in English ": It has rounded and slightly bulbled leaves with small bunches of elongated berries which have thick skins. It gives the wine a lot of body and colour, with a lot of finesse.
Macvin, a very special liqueur wine:
Macvin du Jura can be white, red or rosé depending on the grape varieties used : This liqueur wine is the product of the blending of must and Juran brandy. For white Macvin : Chardonnay, Savagnin ; for red and rosé Macvin : Pinot Noir, Poulsard, Trousseau. The grape juice is cooked and reduced to more than a third of its volume, where brandy and herbs are then added. After maceration, it is topped up to one-third marc brandy, and then it is left for 6 years in barrels. It is a sweet wine obtained from mutage (the addition of alcohol to the must so that the fermentation process is prematurely stopped). These are wines that improve more during ageing than once bottled where the evolution is slower.
There are so many different wine profiles due to Trousseau, an amazing grape variety!
