The grape variety of the appellation is called Melon Blanc or Melon de Bourgogne. At the very beginning of the 18th century, at the heart of the period that was later called the "Little Ice Age", the vines of the Folle-blanche variety froze to death throughout the Nantes region. It was then that the Melon de Bourgogne was planted. It was so successful that it became the typical grape variety of the Nantes region. The wines of the appellation are light to medium-bodied with good ageing potential depending on the terroir. They are dry white wines, refreshing and slightly floral when young. Those that age well gain in complexity and are best enjoyed with refined and cooked dishes such as white meats, poultry, fish. The lighter styles of Muscadet wines are ideal with seafood, especially with oysters!
