L’ excellence du vin français : vins de l'appellation Margaux

The excellence of French wine

The Margaux wines are red wines of controlled designation of origin (AOC) from Bordeaux. The appellation brings together twenty-one châteaux. The commune of Margaux has 9 classified growths, which is the largest number of classified growths in the Médoc.

Where is it?

About 25 kilometres north of the city of Bordeaux, on the left bank of the Gironde, the Margaux vineyards extend over five communes: Margaux, Cantenac, Labarde, Soussans and Arsac.

What kind of soils?

It is the largest communal appellation in the Haut-Médoc, the only communal AOC in the Haut-Médoc to bear the name of a First Growth. A renowned 262-hectare vineyard that has some of the most beautiful gravelly croups in the whole of Bordeaux. The designation of "croupe" of gravel, with its evocative name, alludes to the undulation of the water on the more or less stony banks of soil worked by climatic factors, erosion, but also reworked by man, in particular by the experts in drainage who were the Dutch during the 17th century.

What grape varieties?

Most of the fine wines of Bordeaux are blends of grape varieties, which is what makes them so original. The grape varieties used in Margaux are:

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec.

Why do we talk about fine wines?

Amongst the vineyards is Château Margaux, which bears the same name of the appellation. An estate that produces the excellence of French wines: a First Growth enjoying a terroir shaped by 5 centuries of know-how. It is one of the most prestigious wines of Bordeaux. The great wines of the château are balanced wines of remarkable intensity, recognised as the greatest wines in the world: an exceptional tannic concentration with an extraordinary capacity for evolution. It is necessary to be patient to appreciate all their gustatory finesse and their aromatic complexity.
