As a starter: wine pairing with melon and ham?

As a starter, melon and ham are the perfect pair. Served with Serrano ham, Parma ham, Bayonne ham or even Coppa ham that we like to wrap around the grissini, the melon brightens up the plate.

Favour aromatic and juicy wines, that are full of fruits. The wine needs to be able to match with the sweet and fruity flavours of melon.

The second step is to choose the sweetness of the wine according to the dish.

Lively and mineral white wines should be avoided.

Melon AND DRY ROSÉ WINE

Rosé wine is ideal to match with the saltiness of ham. It brings liveliness while offering its fruity expressiveness. Rosé wines from Provence are the best choice: Bandol, Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence or Côte de Provence will highlight the refreshing side of the melon while preserving its fragrant and sweet side. Favour more structured grape varieties such as Mourvèdre and Grenache, that pair well with cured ham.

Melon AND PORT WINE

Melon and Port wine, it's a well known classic. However, Port wine is not always the perfect match: too woody, it contrasts with the freshness of melon. As it is so deeply rooted in manners, choose a young Port wine with little complexity. Less known white and rosé Port wines can also be a better choise.

Melon AND SWEET WINE

Vins doux naturels (sweet natural wines) are the best choise to pair with melon. Muscat as well as fruity explosion of Grenache in Maury or Rivesaltes are excellent assets. Gathered in a wooden box, Domaine Lafage offers you the unstoppable trilogy for the summer!

Let's not forget the Banyuls, provided that it is not too old: avoid the "Hors d'âge". Fruity wine without heaviness, the Domaine de la Rectorie reserves you a real gem!

AS A dessert

Don't hesitate to play on the sweet notes! Natural sweet wines, of course, but also dare to try sweet varietal wines: Gewürztraminer or  late harvest Riesling will rival elegance with their powerful aromas. With a surprising persistence on the palate, their finish on delicate spicy notes will prolong your summer evenings.

HOW TO CHOOSE A melon?

  • • From the beginning of June until the end of September: yes, it's not all year round!
  • • Choose the heaviest! Don't trust the appearance, it is the weight that counts. Ripe melon is firm and heavy.
  • One detail that matters: the peduncle. It peels off when the fruit is ripe.
  • • Smell it! A melon is fresh if it is pleasantly scented.
  • • Is it not ripe? Leave it for 2 to 3 days in room temperature.

HOW TO PROPERLY STORE A MELON?

  • • In the fridge: until 2 to 3 days wrapped in an airtight bag, as its strong odour may invade other foods.
  • • In the freezer: Once ripe, dice the melon and place in an airtight bag. Tip: These frozen melon cubes can be used as ice cubes without diluting the wine. Crunch the fruit at the last sip, it's so classy!
