A bold creation

Impressive in its excellence and consistency of quality year after year, Dom Pérignon is one of the most prestigious Champagne brands in the world. Arousing the curiosity of novices and creating excitement among connoisseurs of this sparkling nectar, this great House stands out by cultivating exception and rarity, producing only vintage Champagnes.

This rule applies in particular to Dom Pérignon Rosé Champagne. Produced for the first time in 1959, this cuvée is only made in exceptional years from grapes harvested from the finest terroirs in the Champagne region. Since its creation, Dom Pérignon Rosé has only been produced around twenty times.

A delicious invitation to transgression, this exceptional nectar was born of the audacity of Dom Pérignon's cellar master: to break free from the rules of Champagne production and push back the boundaries of Champagne creation.

Dom Pérignon Rosé Champagne is the result of a daring blend of Pinot Noirs from the greatest terroirs of Champagne and Chardonnay. It only comes to light after almost 12 years of slow, controlled transformation in the cellar. At the end of this long maturation, Dom Pérignon Rosé reveals itself with a subtle combination of freshness and an incomparably rich palate.

dom perignon rosé 2008

Rosé Champagne Vintage 2008

Considered a complicated year, 2008 is nevertheless one of the best vintages in Champagne, particularly for Dom Pérignon. Part of a decade of remarkable sunshine, this vintage proved to be an explosive one, full of surprises. With consistently grey and overcast weather, Spring and Summer were marked by a lack of warmth and light. However, as in 1996, 2000 and 2006, the situation changed in September with the appearance of sunshine and wind. It was September that made this vintage, late in the season and miraculously so. This turn of events favoured the ripening of the grapes, revealing an unprecedented high level of balance. The daring blend of Pinot Noir grapes brings fruitiness and structure to the wine, underlining its precision and natural brilliance and expressing the audacity of its creation.

This vintage full of contrasts gives birth to an exceptional Dom Pérignon Rosé. On the nose, this Champagne wine opens with notes of raspberry and wild strawberry, evolving rapidly towards scents of iris and violet. These powdery notes are complemented on the second nose by greener fragrances, closer to privet, camphor leaf and angelica.

On the palate, the first sensations offered by this rosé Champagne, gradually unfolding, are fleshy, tactile and silky, before becoming firmer. The structure of the Pinot Noir envelops the acidic structure, the signature of the vintage, revealing the heart of this Champagne, a vibrant heart that offers the vital power of Champagne. This nectar offers a lingering finish on notes of peony and white pepper.

What is so special about Dom Pérignon rosé Champagne?

With each Dom Pérignon Rosé cuvée, the challenge is to highlight the uniqueness of that vintage, while maintaining the Dom Pérignon style. A true embodiment of fruit, this Champagne with its dazzling aromas reveals, vintage after vintage, the different aromatic nuances of Pinot Noir. These predominantly fruity aromas (strawberry, raspberry, morello cherry and fig, but also roasted apricot and candied orange) are sublimated by the finesse, light notes and mineral elegance of the Chardonnay.

A unique gastronomic experience

Dom Pérignon Rosé is sure to find a place on any table, and goes perfectly with a wide variety of dishes. The rich, silky texture of this Champagne wine opens up a whole new world of possibilities when it comes to food and wine pairings. While a variety of combinations are possible, southern and Mediterranean cuisines go wonderfully well with the nectar's palate.

As an aperitif, Dom Pérignon Rosé is the perfect accompaniment to a buffet of Mediterranean dishes such as tzatziki, hummus and mezzes. Fragrant, spicy dishes are a perfect match for this Champagne Rosé.

As a starter, Dom Pérignon Rosé is an excellent accompaniment to duck foie gras with citrus fruit or fig chutney, which will echo the aromatic notes of this wine. This Champagne has a rich flavour and a vinous structure that enhances the mellowness of the full-bodied foie gras. The texture of the foie gras then coats the wine.

From meat to seafood and poultry, a myriad of dishes can be matched with Dom Pérignon Rosé. This cuvée is ideal with fish dishes such as roast red mullet fillet, fish in sauce or grilled, as well as shellfish (lobster, prawns, etc.). It is also a perfect accompaniment to lamb, beef or poultry.

Fruity and generous, Dom Pérignon Rosé can also be enjoyed at the end of a meal, particularly with red fruit desserts. These diverse combinations make it a truly gourmet Champagne.

How to serve this exceptional brut rosé Champagne?

To enjoy Dom Pérignon Rosé Champagne to the full, make sure it is served in the best possible conditions. Before opening this precious nectar, make sure the bottle is at an ideal temperature of 8°C to 10°C. This will allow this vintage Champagne to release its full palate of aromas.

As for the glass, Riedel has created a glass that embodies and exalts the uniqueness of Dom Pérignon vintage Champagnes. Reflecting the brand's vision, this container reveals the harmony and aesthetic ideal of Dom Pérignon Champagnes. Thanks to this glass, the three dimensions of Dom Pérignon (year, aromatic complexity and colour) are optimally expressed. To preserve the quality of the glasses, we recommend that you wash them in very hot water or steam before air-drying them.

Champagne sold at record prices

Although there are a myriad of Champagnes available to the greatest number of people, some cuvées are reserved for those prepared to pay the price. Indeed, these nectars command exorbitant prices, creating astonishment among neophytes. Such is the case, for example, with Dom Pérignon Rosé Champagne, some of which have been sold at astronomical prices.

At an auction organised by Acker Merrall & Condit in New York in 2008, a lot of two bottles of the first Dom Pérignon Rosé vintage was sold for $84,700, or $42,350 a bottle. This prestigious Champagne was served in Persepolis in 1971, during the festivities to commemorate the 2,500th anniversary of the founding of the Persian Empire by Cyrus the Great. Only 306 bottles of the Rosé 1959 were ever produced, and none had ever been sold before this auction.

In 2010, another record was set in the UK, at the Westbury Hotel in London. During the VIP evening following the screening of the new film 'Boogie Woogie', the buyer, a Russian billionaire, spent £50,000 on a Methuselah of Dom Pérignon Rose Gold 1996 Champagne, nicknamed "the king of Champagnes". He would have paid just over £1,562.50 per glass. The most expensive bottle ever bought in a bar, this particularly rare and sought-after Champagne was born in a year considered to be one of the best of the 20th century. The bottle is a remarkable work of art. It is encased in a rose-gold-coated metal casing that alone is worth almost £20,000.

The same year, another sale hit the headlines. A consignment of 30 bottles of Dom Pérignon Rosé Œnothèque and magnums from 1966, 1978, 1982, 1985, 1988 and 1990 sold for HK$1,331,000 or US$170,641. This is a world record for the sale of a single Champagne lot. It is also the first wine lot to sell for more than HK$1 million in Hong Kong by Sotheby's.

In 2019, another edition of Dom Pérignon Rosé was sold at a staggering price. The House of Dom Pérignon gave five artists carte blanche to create an exclusive Dom Pérignon Rosé 2003. Specialists in "Ebru Art", the traditional Turkish art of reproducing the effect of marble on different surfaces, these artists, from a variety of backgrounds, painted these bottles by hand. Each of them has been able to express the nuances of the colour of this exceptional rosé Champagne with their own personality. The unique pieces in this exclusive collection are priced at 100,000€.

légende dom pérignon

Dom Pérignon, the story of a legendary Champagne

Created by Moët & Chandon, Dom Pérignon is now a separate brand belonging to the luxury group LVMH. Renowned around the world for its prestigious champagnes, this Champagne House is famous for its rich and unique history.

légende dom perignon

The monk Dom Pierre Pérignon, the founder of this legendary brand

Dom Pérignon Champagne is so famous partly because of the myth surrounding its history, particularly that of the monk Dom Pierre Pérignon. Born in Sainte-Menehould, in the Argonne region, Pierre Pérignon joined the mother abbey of the Benedictine congregation of Saint-Vanne and Saint-Hydulphe in Verdun in 1657, with a view to becoming a monk. For 10 years, he acquired a wide range of theological and intellectual knowledge. In 1667, Pierre Pérignon was ordained a priest. In 1668, Pierre Pérignon was appointed cellarer and procurator of Saint-Pierre de Hautvillers abbey. Situated on the heights of Épernay, this monastery was built in 650 by the archbishop of Reims, Saint Nivard.

As procurator of Hautvillers Abbey, Dom Pérignon was responsible for both monastic affairs and the running of the vineyard, which he managed to increase from around 10 hectares to 25 hectares of vines. The Benedictine monk also excelled in wine production. Dom Pierre Pérignon was renowned for his expertise and talent as an enologist. In his quest for perfection, he aspired to create the best wine in the world.

Blessed with a great spirit of innovation and a keen sense of observation of nature, the Procurator of Hautvillers Abbey developed various viticultural techniques to improve the quality of his community's wine. Despite his blindness, he aspired to find the best possible taste. To achieve this, he did not hesitate to taste and blend grapes from different crus and grape varieties. Dom procureur also develops other techniques, such as gentle, fractional pressing to produce white juice from black grape varieties. These different methods enabled him to improve the quality of the abbey's wines, which had previously been still wines. The business quickly became a success.

The Champagne House of Dom Pérignon is so famous because of the legend that credits this illustrious monk with discovering the method of making sparkling wine, or méthode champenoise. Dom Pierre Pérignon is said to have discovered a technique for controlling the foaming of Champagne wine inside bottles by dripping beeswax into the neck of the bottle. This process causes a second fermentation inside the bottle due to the sugar present in the wax. The monk Dom Pérignon is also said to have applied the vinification technique for Limoux sparkling wines, discovered during a pilgrimage to the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Hilaire, to Champagne wines. The use of corks and thick glass bottles are also innovations attributed to this monk. However, there is no real proof that the monk Dom Pérignon was the sole creator of the Champagne method.

The brand's exceptional expertise

Inspired by the quest for perfection and the creative ambition of the monk Dom Pierre Pérignon, the House of Dom Pérignon is constantly seeking a harmony in which to deploy its aesthetic and sensory values: intensity, precision, tactility, complexity and minerality. To achieve this harmony, this great Champagne brand relies on unique and exceptional expertise, handed down from generation to generation by its cellar masters.

To create great Champagnes, Dom Pérignon conscientiously respects the fundamental principles set out in the Manifesto, which reflects the brand's philosophy and vision. In addition to the vintage-only nature of Dom Pérignon Champagnes, blending is another fundamental principle mentioned in this document. From vineyard management to vinification and harvesting, every stage in the process of making the cuvées is carried out with blending always in mind.

Complexity, achieved through slow maturation over a long period of time, is another key feature of Manifesto. This slow transformation preserves the freshness of the fruit while revealing the aromas and textures of the Champagne.

What other Dom Pérignon cuvées are there?

In addition to Dom Pérignon Rosé, the legendary house of Dom Pérignon offers other exceptional Champagnes:

  • Dom Pérignon Vintage: The house's original cuvée, this Champagne is characterised by its perfect harmony and remarkable balance, achieved after slow maturation on the lees for at least eight years in the cellar. This fruity, floral nectar reflects the opposites and complementarities, the paradoxes and contrasts of the creative process. It perfectly reveals the character of the seasons.
  • Dom Pérignon P2 or P3: Reflecting the passage of time in the expression of Champagne, "Plénitudes" is a concept created by former cellar master Richard Geoffroy. According to Geoffroy, Champagne does not evolve in a linear fashion, but in stages, reaching a form of plenitude. The concept is based on Champagne reaching a new stage of expression over different periods of time. After 12 to 15 years maturing on its lees, the Champagne reaches its second fullness, giving birth to the Dom Pérignon P2 cuvée. The third stage is reached after 25 years or more, creating the Dom Pérignon P3 cuvée. The latter is particularly rare and precious.
