A major Burgundian appellation, planted with Chardonnay for its white wines and Pinot Noir for its red wines, Beaune has 42 terroirs (climatic regions) classified as Premier Cru. The name of the wines of Beaune and Beaune Premier Cru are usually followed by the name of the climate of origin. All the red and white wines of the appellation have a grand balance and grace, but the Premiers Crus are full of body and spirit. The appellation is renowned for its both red and white wines. Château de Meursault, Luis Jadot, Domaine Chanson Père et Fils or Bouchard Père et Fils exemplify the excellence of this outstanding appellation that draws the attention of the whole world.
Red wine: Sometimes with a velvety finesse, sometimes powerful and well-structured, the red wines vary according to the diversity of the climates. Quite light in the Grèves, they are more fleshy in the Clos de Mouche. Most Beaunes are robust, full-bodied without being heady. Tannic and powerful, with a dark colour and a bouquet of fruity or animal notes. Sensual and fruity, each sip gives the impression of biting into fresh grapes. With age, notes of spice and truffle are revealed. Ageing potential of 5 to 10 years.
White wine: Very aromatic, supple, rich but with a good acidity, the Beaunes Premiers Crus exploit the full potential of the Chardonnay. Notes of almond, dried fruit, fern and white flowers characteristic of the grape variety, with occasional notes of honey and cinnamon. Potential for ageing from 3 to 5 years.
Red wine: Roasted poultry, game meat, cheeses (reblochon, brie, saint nectaire)
White wine: Asparagus, freshwater fish, crustaceans, sushi, chanterelles, frog legs, sweetbread, savoury pie, terrine, fine charcuterie, cheeses (Bleu de Bresse, Crottins de Chavignol)
