Also known as Roter Traminer in Germany, it is extremely well known in Alsace, where the name is interchangeable between the appellation and the grape variety these wines are made from. "Traminer" is actually the aromatic white grape variety of Tramin (Northern Italy), to which is added "gewürz" which means "spicy" or " fragrant". The rarity of these powerful and very characteristic scents are greatly valued, and instantly recognizable by the aromas that bring to mind rose or lychee. Gewürztraminer is vinified as either a dry or sweet white wine, with the latter thanks to late harvest Vendanges Tardives and noble rot. It is thus not a grape variety with a very high yield, which makes the wines highly prized.
Dry Whites : Aromatic power out of the ordinary. Characteristic notes of lychee and rose, complemented by aromas of quince, citrus peel, candied apricot, acacia, sweet spices (muscatel nut, cinnamon, clove) and possible exotic notes (pineapple, passion fruit, mango).
Sweet Whites : The botrytised grape (known as being affected by "noble rot") gives rise to a sweet wine with a yellow gold colour and amber shades. On the nose we find the same aromatic richness as the dry wines with more nuances of honey and dry apricot. The cuvées from the Grains Nobles selection are sweeter than those from the Vendanges Tardives. Unctuous mouth and pronounced softness. Smooth and persistent length.
Dry Whites: Ideal with seafood (crab, lobster, prawns) and fish in curry sauce. Its aromatic power goes well with Chinese, Indian, Thai or Malaysian cuisine, with a slight spicy flavour. Washed rind cheeses: Munster, Livarot, Maroille, Epoisse, Mont d'Or...
Sweet Whites : Alsatian specialities: Munster with cumin seeds, also blue-veined cheeses. Fresh or fried foie gras on spiced bread. Dessert: Yellow or white fruit tarts. Tarte tatin. Exotic fruit desserts (mango, pineapple, passion fruit, mangosteen...).
