THE CÔTES DE PROVENCE CRU CLASSÉ APPELLATION

The Côtes-de-Provence appellation stretches along the creeks and beaches between Marseille and Nice, up the valleys of the Arc and Argens rivers and is filled with the scent of thyme. It covers three departments (Var, Bouches-du-Rhône, Alpes-Maritimes).

What is a "Cru Classé" ?

It wasn't until 1955 that 23 estates and châteaux in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur were awarded the exceptional title of "Cru Classé", just like the prestigious Bordeaux appellations. Today, 18 estates in Provence can bear this prestigious designation. The '"Cru Classé" appellation is a classification of wines established in France to distinguish high-quality wines produced in certain wine-growing regions. This classification was created to highlight the best wine producers, the best viticultural practices and to help consumers identify wines of superior quality. The classification is based on criteria such as the quality of the terroir, viticultural practices, production methods and the historical reputation of the region.

SHALL WE TASTE?

Crus Classés vary from one terroir to another, from one estate to another, from one cuvée to another and from one vintage to another. However, certain organoleptic criteria are not misleading and make it possible to classify them in the nominative list of Estates and Châteaux that have obtained the exceptional title.

Appearance: clear colour, ranging from pale pink to light orange and salmon.

Nose: these rosé wines can be intense or discreet, powerful or of a tender finesse. The nose can be fruity (red fruits, black fruits), floral, herbal (fennel, thyme, broom, dill), vegetal (mint, tobacco, herbal tea), mineral (gunflint) or balsamic (pine bark).

Palate: these are dry, round, structured wines, but always fresh and elegant. They are beautifully balanced with long lingering finish.

Serving temperature: 10-12 °C.

Ageing potential: drink within the year, but the best cuvées can be aged.

Food & wine pairing: aperitif, cold cuts, starters (caprese salad, fried courgette flowers), fish (red mullet, bouillabaisse), red meat (grilled) or white meat, cheeses (soft cheeses, banon, pélardon), dessert (crème brûlée, strawberries)

EMBLEMATIC GRAPE VARIETIES FOR PRESTIGIOUS ROSÉS

Provence's Crus Classés rosé wines are distinguished by an exceptional terroir made up of mineral-rich soils, a warm, dry Mediterranean climate and maritime influences. These wines are the result of a rigorous production process, based on very strict criteria such as limited yields, regular checks on the quality of the grapes, precise vinification and prolonged maturation in barrels or vats. They are mainly made from a blend of several grape varieties typical of the region, which may vary depending on the appellation and the wine-making practices of the producers. The main grape varieties used for these fine wines, with their delicate aromas of red fruit, citrus and flowers, are as follows:

  • Grenache: originally from Spain, Grenache is the most widespread grape variety in Provence, adapting perfectly to the region's dry, windy conditions. Grenache produces generous wines with a silky texture and notes of red fruit and spices.
  • Syrah: very popular in Provence, this variety from Greece produces intense, well-structured rosé wines with aromas of red and black fruit, spices and black pepper.
  • Carignan: a very fertile grape variety, often used in blends with other varieties such as Grenache. It produces powerful, fruity wines with notes of red fruit.
  • Mourvèdre: also a Spanish grape variety, widely grown in Provence, it produces robust, rich, complex wines with aromas of black fruit, spices and garrigue.
  • Tibouren: a rare, local grape variety from Provence, mainly used to produce delicate rosé wines with notes of white fruit and citrus.
  • Cinsault: often used in blends, it produces light, aromatic rosé wines with notes of red fruit and citrus.
  • Cabernet-Sauvignon: this grape variety is very famous and popular throughout the world, and is also grown in Provence. Cabernet-Sauvignon produces powerful wines with complex aromas and notes of blackcurrant, cedar and spices.
