Prestigious, elegant and deeply coloured reds, the Côte-Rôtie wines come from the oldest vineyard in the Rhône valley, which is said to be the original site of vine growing in Gaul. The appellation owes its name to the exposure of the slopes, burnt by the sun during the summer season. Combining delicacy and elegance, these wines gain a spectacular fullness with age and their exceptional aromatic finesse make them highly sought after wines.
The most northerly AOC of the Côtes du Rhône, this appellation, which produces only red wines, is spread over the communes of Ampuis, Saint-Cyr-sur-Rhône and Tupins-Sémons. Situated to the south of the Vienne river and around thirty kilometres south of Lyon, the vineyards stretch along the right bank of the Rhône, clinging to the steep slopes of the Côte Brune, made up of micaschists, and the Côte Blonde, made up of gneiss.
A true gateway to the Rhône Valley, the Côte-Rôtie appellation is a very old vineyard in the northern Rhône Valley, planted on very steep slopes (coteaux in French). The slope, which can be as steep as 60%, allows the vines to roast (rôtir in French) in the summer sunshine. The AOC owes its name to the exposure of the hillsides, which benefit the vineyard's sloping soils, which are ‘burnt’ by the sun during the summer months.
Two grape varieties dominate production: Syrah and Viognier. Côte-Rôtie wines, often considered to be among the finest Côtes du Rhône wines, are made mostly, if not entirely, from Syrah. The northern AOC produces only very powerful red wines made from 100% Syrah or 80% Syrah and 20% Viognier. Syrah is reputed to be a particularly hardy red grape variety that flourishes perfectly in Côte-Rôtie.
The emblematic Côte Rôtie wine region is made up of two distinct terroirs: the Côte Brune to the north and the Côte Blonde to the south.
This fine red wine, with its slightly spicy flavour, has a very dark colour due to its main grape variety, making it ideal for ageing. It's perfect for those who love ageing wines!
Appearance: the wines of Côte-Rôtie have a fairly deep, dark colour that evolves from a garnet hue in the youthful phase to a more orange hue after some ageing. A sumptuous colour that reveals a perfect aptitude for ageing.
Nose: the nose is very elegant and rich. In wines made with a little Viognier, one finds particular aromatic characters marked by floral notes similar to violets. With ageing, the wine develops original notes: empyreumatic aromas and above all nuances of cooked or candied fruit such as Morello cherry or cherry in brandy.
Palate: the palate is finer and more elegant than that of other wines from the northern Rhône. When the wines have reached their fullness after a few years of maturing and ageing, the structure becomes silky. The finesse of the tannins can be amplified by the presence of softness and roundness, especially in years of good maturity. This sense of richness is enhanced when a certain percentage of Viognier (less than 20%) has been co-fermented with Syrah. As with the great Syrah wines, it is matured in oak barrels so that the olfactory and gustatory characteristics are refined.
