For three generations, the Retief family has been growing exceptional grapes and producing exquisite wines that reflect the region's unique terroir. Van Loveren has been owned by the Retief family since 1937, when Hennie Retief acquired the farm in the Robertson Valley. Hennie's wife, Jean (née van Zyl), persuaded him to rename the farm in honour of Christina van Loveren, an ancestor whose wedding chest she had just acquired from an aunt. With over 1,000 hectares of vineyards planted at high altitude (80-250 m), exposure to the sun is optimal, resulting in expressive wines with intense colour. Located between two mountains and crossed by a river, the vineyard enjoys ideal exposure and terroir. Van Loveren has now become Africa's leading family-owned wine estate, a testament to their hard work and quality.
