Located in the small town of Bannockburn, in the Central Otago district in the south of New Zealand ’s South Island, the Terra Sancta estate dates back to the origins of this prestigious wine-growing region, the southernmost in the world and one of the country’s most renowned. Planted from 1991 onwards by Sarah Eliott and Mark Weldon on Felton Road, the four vineyards of this ‘sacred land’—certified organic and cultivated using regenerative methods—thrive on the banks of the glacial Kawarau River, on soils of limestone, clay, quartz and schist. Comprising a rich mosaic of plots and terraces, where old vines of Pinot Noir (the dominant variety, which finds one of its finest expressions here!) Riesling , Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris , alongside more recent plantings of Gamay and, more boldly, the Italian Alpine varieties Lagrein, Dolcetto and Barbera, Terra Sancta reflects the purity and energy of this mountainous region. Synonymous with great wines, the Sancta terroir produces vintages acclaimed by critics for their remarkable precision, great aromatic complexity, minerality and excellent ageing potential.
