Founded in 2002 in the Marche region (central Italy ) by Barone Pizzini, one of Franciacorta’s leading producers, Pievalta is based in Maiolati Spontini, in the hinterland of Ancona. The estate now comprises 44 hectares of vineyards, which have been managed organically from the outset and, since 2005, have been predominantly cultivated using biodynamic methods at the request of oenologist and manager Alessandro Fenino. Together with his partner Silvia Loschi, whom he met in the vineyards of Barone Pizzini, this nature-loving Milanese produces, in the hills on either side of the River Esino, a range of wines with distinct yet complementary colours and characters. At the heart of the Pievalta project lies the prestigious Verdicchio, one of Italy’s most important indigenous white grape varieties, associated with the Marche region’s ‘ grand cru ’, the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi. A structured white wine with mineral notes and a flavourful bouquet, available in DOC and Riserva DOCG versions from this ethical winery – the first in the Marche region to be certified as biodynamic. With two IGT Marche wines and a Metodo Classico Spumante, the estate’s wines reflect Pievalta’s commitment and the philosophy of Barone Pizzini – a pioneer in sustainability – centred on a single idea: ‘a quality wine is born from the symbiosis of its constituent elements’.
