A pioneer of the Bolgheri Protected Designation of Origin (awarded in 1984), Michele Satta produced his first wine on the Tuscan coast in 1983. Passionate about the land and his native Italy , this Lombard of Sardinian origin discovered the village of Castagneto Carducci whilst on a family holiday, before completing his studies in agronomy in Pisa. It was love at first sight for this natural amphitheatre nestled between the Metalliferous Hills, south of Livorno, the Maremma scrubland and the Tyrrhenian Sea. In the early 1990s, Michele and his wife Lucia purchased all their vineyards (which they had previously leased) and built a modern winery. The winemaker produces his own ‘Super Tuscans’ under his own label and has played a part in the rise of these new wines, which are blended in the Bordeaux style. Over the years, he has experimented with numerous indigenous and international grape varieties, selecting those best suited to his 25 hectares of vineyards, located in the southernmost part of the Bolgheri DOC. Renowned for his in-depth knowledge of one of Italy’s few recent vineyards, Michel Satta has been working since 2015 hand in hand with two of his six children, Giacomo and Benedetta. Together, they produce and market a range of red and white organic wines , cultivated using biodynamic methods, blending distinctive character, varietal expression and an authentic approach to the Tuscan maritime terroir.
