In northern Italy , Lombardy is renowned for its great lakes, nestled amongst the foothills of the Pre-Alps. A prime tourist destination, the region is also a rich wine-growing area, home to the prestigious Franciacorta DOCG zone, which produces the finest sparkling wines to the north-east of Milan. Six kilometres from Lake Iseo, in the province of Brescia, the small town of Adro is home to Ferghettina’s original estate, which specialises in the production of the famous Spumante, the transalpine cousin of French champagnes. Deeply rooted in the culture of Franciacorta, Ferghettina was founded in 1991 by Roberto Gatti, a former winemaker at Bellavista, one of the appellation’s leading names. His first wines – a still red and a still white, and above all a sparkling Brut Metodo Classico – laid the foundations for his success. Over time, the vineyard has expanded, and today it is the new generation – his children Laura and Matteo, both oenologists – who are continuing the family venture alongside their team, across 11 municipalities in Franciacorta and 200 hectares of vineyards, all certified organic . A unique mosaic of climates and terroirs, mirroring Ferghettina’s iconic bottle, firmly anchored on its elegant square base.
