Domaine des Comtes Lafon is one of the most respected names in Burgundy , with roots dating back to the late 19th century. Jules Lafon began the estate's history in 1894 by acquiring exceptional plots in Meursault . His grandson René Lafon took over the estate in 1956, ending sharecropping and beginning to vinify and bottle at the estate in 1961. In 1984, Dominique Lafon took over and consolidated the plots, increasing the estate from 13 to around 16 hectares, spread between Meursault, Volnay, Monthelie and Chassagne- Montrachet .A pioneer in sustainable viticulture, the estate has been certified organic since 1995 and has been working biodynamically since 1998. The care taken with the vines is based on soil cultivation, the use of natural compost and mass selection of old vines. No chemicals are used, and each plot is managed with extreme attention to the balance of the plants. In the cellar, the philosophy is to accompany the wine with precision and without excess. The Chardonnays are pressed slowly, cold settled, then fermented naturally in barrels, with a long ageing period of 18 to 22 months that preserves the expression of the terroir while adding complexity and depth. The Pinot Noirs are vinified gently, via long vatting, carefully integrating the press wines to produce subtle and refined reds.Today, the estate is in the hands of Léa and Pierre Lafon, who continue the family's quest for excellence. The wines, notably the Meursault Premier Crus (Charmes, Perrières, Genevrières, etc.) and the extremely rare Montrachet Grand Cru , are among the most sought-after in Burgundy. Their style: whites of great purity, depth and precision, and elegant, structured reds.
