The Clos de Marquis label was created at the end of the 19th century by Théophile Skawinski, director of Château Les Cases. At the time, it's made it possible to maintain the quality standard of the great wine from Léoville du Marquis de Las Cases. It was in some ways a foretaste of the second wine concept. Vines planted on the outside of the great terroirs produce Clos du Marquis and those planted inside the exceptional terroirs produce the great wines of Léoville du Marquis de Las Cases. Consequently, Clos du Marquis was Léoville Las Cases' second wine for a long time. Since the 1989 vintage, it has now become another wine from Las Cases made principally from the outside terroirs, in contrast to the great Clos de Las Cases. Clos du Marquis is the expression of a type of Saint-Julien that's surrounded by other prestigious crus, such as Pichon, Longueville, Comtesse de Lalande, Léoville Poyferre, Léoville Barton, Lagrange and Talbot.
