Founded in 1905 by Angelo Ballabio in Casteggio, a small town renowned for its vineyards in the heart of the Oltrepò Pavese – a major wine-growing region in south-western Lombardy – the Ballabio estate was the first to specialise in the production of Metodo Classico sparkling wines made from Pinot Noir . The variety, widely cultivated in Oltrepò Pavese (one of the world’s leading producers, after Champagne and Burgundy ), thrives in the province of Pavia, which is sensitive to variations in terroir, the continental climate and the poor soils of this tiny triangle of land nestled south of the Po, between Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna. Situated on the limestone slopes of the Apennines, Ballabio’s 48 hectares of vineyards excel in the production of fine, celebratory sparkling wines. Now run by Filippo, Mattia, Alfio and Nicolo’ Nevelli – brothers and cousins united by a shared passion – the century-old estate continues its founder’s dream of excellence and modernity, producing a widely distributed range of Spumante, featuring elegant, complex and well-structured sparkling wines. A true benchmark in the world of quality sparkling wines!
