GROS MANSENG and PETIT MANSENG

The two Pyrenean grape varieties

Gros Manseng and Petit Manseng

White Pyrenean grape varieties mainly planted in the South-West France. They produce lively and fragrant dry and sweet white wines produced in Béarn and Gascony. While Petit Manseng is recognised as having more finesse and a better aptitude for over-ripeness in late harvests, Gros Manseng is more robust. The first one, harvested late in the harvest, is responsible for the reputation of the sweet Jurançon, blended or not with other local varieties (Gros Mansang, Courbu). It is reputed to be difficult to vinify, which makes them elegant vintages of choice. Dry or sweet wine, the cuvées made from these grape varieties are marked by the vivacity and intensity of their aromas, like the sweet Jurançons which are among the best sweet wines in the world.

The two Mansengs, Pyrenean grape varieties

Of the two grape varieties, Petit Manseng is the less common. Its name is due to the small size of its berries compared to those of its parent variety.

A size that allows the bunches to dry more quickly, ideal conditions for vinifying great sweet wines.

However, the two grape varieties produce wines that are quite similar.

Sweet Jurançon, the Pyrenean gold

Perched on a balcony facing the Pyrenees mountain range, the vines are known to give a sweet, syrupy and dry Jurançon. But it is the sweet Jurançon that is talked about far beyond our borders.

The Petit Maseng harvested late in the season is the dominant grape variety of the famous sweet Jurançon. It is blended with Gros Maseng and Courbu.

The colour of the sweet Jurançon is gold: golden yellow or golden with green reflections. A colour that can be appreciated by watching the tears running down the walls of the glass. The slower they flow, the more residual sugars the wine contains. However, this wine does not lack liveliness! It shows an astonishing concentration of its aromas, with an infinitesimal delicacy.

It is said that a few drops of this golden-coloured wine were put on the lips of the future Henri IV King of France during his baptism. This story galvanizes the reputation of this wine that has become mythical. A wine whose quality is equal to its status as a royal wine!
