GRANDS-ÉCHEZEAUX GRAND CRU
Between Chambolle-Musigny and Vosne-Romanée, Grands-Échezeaux is one of the Grands Crus that have made the reputation of the Côte de Nuits in the Côte d'Or. The appellation should not be confused with its neighbour, Échezeaux, situated further east, on the upper part of the same slope. Here, it is all the potential of the Pinot Noir that is expressed on a predestined terroir. Like many Grand Cru appellations in Burgundy, this one also has the characteristic of being small in surface (10 hectares) but large in quality. The low production also explains the soaring prices of these bottles, which sometimes cost several hundred euros. It is therefore a wine that is chosen with care and kept for special occasions.
THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME
Échézeaux, name is derived from a plural: it comes from "chezal" which meant "hamlet" in the past. There must have been some groupings of houses which have long since disappeared. Both Échézeaux and Grands Échézeaux are attached to the commune of Flagey-Échézeaux. Like Vougeot, Grands Échézeaux is a creation of the monks of Cîteaux dating back to the 12th century.
ORGANIC AND BIODYNAMIC, A SECOND NATURE!
Although not certified, the Pinot Noir is grown organically or biodynamically, as are most of the vineyards in the prestigious surrounding appellations. Green harvesting, by hand, is increasingly practised in this appellation, an operation carried out with the aim of regulating yields and above all increasing the quality of the remaining grapes. This important detail helps the wines, which are already based on precise plot work, to progress.
