The grape variety of the famous Tokaj sweet wine
Originally from Central Europe, Furmint has found its home in Hungary. It buds early, ripens late and is susceptible to noble rot. Therefore it is capable of producing complex and concentrated sweet wines that age well. It is the key variety of the famous Hungarian sweet wine: Tokaj. Furmint also produces dry and aromatic white wines. It can be found as a varietal wine and as a blend with Harslevelu and Sárga Muskotály (Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains).
Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Slovenia
Dry wines vary from simple, unoaked and fresh wines that are meant to be drunk young to more concentrated ageworthy wines matured in new oak.
Classic Tokaj has deep amber colour, high acidity and intense aromas of orange marmalade, apricots and honey. Sometimes completed with notes of smoke, coffee and caramel.
The are several different sweetness levels of Tokaj. The sweeter the wine more complex and intense it is.
