Faugères AOC

An appellation that deserves greater recognition. Red, rosé and white wines with minerality from the unique schist soils. Hot and dry summers, strong gusts of tramontana and sea winds blowing over these wild landscapes, one recognises the characteristics of the Mediterranean climate. Produced from 85% Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Cinsault grapes, the red wines are full-bodied and powerful on the palate, with long and spicy finish. A subtle balance of fine and silky tannins that evoke a light perfume of the garrigue. In rosé, the wines offer delicious fruity notes. The same grape varieties are used as for red wine. In white wine, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne and Vermentino (also known as Rolle) are used in the blend to express the minerality of the schist. A minerality that blends with the sweetness of the aromas of almond and ripe apricot.

Carte du Languedoc

THE ELEGANCE OF LANGUEDOC FAUGERES

An appellation that deserves greater recognition. Red, rosé and white wines with the minerality of schist: the particularity of the Cru Faugeres.

A TERROIR, AN APPELLATION

The Appellation faugeres AOC was created in 1982 for red and white wines. In 2005, white wines, a more private production, became AOC wines, which were then recognized by the INAO (Institut National des Appellations d'Origine). It includes 7 municipalities, represents 57 private cellars and a cooperative for a total of 150 producers.

The hot and dry summers, strong gusts of the tramontane and sea winds blowing over these wild landscapes, reveal the characteristics of the Mediterranean climate.

In total, 1943 hectares are planted on a schist terroir in the relief. These yellow, grey, ochre and orange schists represent one of the oldest soils in the world and the only homogeneous terroir in Languedoc. Originally at the bottom of the sea, clays and sands have accumulated over millions of years. As a result of compression and extreme temperatures, these sediments have become shales, which are geologically referred to as "cut into sheets". These soils, raised by the mountainous formations of the Alps and the Pyrenees to give this balcony overlooking the Biterroise plain, drain water and today make the Cru Faugeres unique.

A VINTAGE THAT COMES IN 3 COLOURS

These sandstone schists resulting from the compression of clays in the primary era bring a natural acidity into fine and elegant wines from their youth.

With a production rate of 85%, the red wines from Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Cinsault offer on the palate the quality of ample and powerful wines with a beautiful spicy length. A subtle balance of fine and silky tannins that evoke a light scent of garrigue.

In rosé, the wines offer fruity and gourmet notes. The same grape varieties as the red wine are used.

In white, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, and Vermentino, also known by its other name "rolle", are the varieties that enter the blend to express all the minerality of the schists. A minerality that blends with the sweetness of ripe almond or apricot aromas.

A recent appellation, the Faugeres cru adapt to the most demanding palates. The reputation of Faugeres wines is also increased by the involvement of winegrowers in environmental matters. 45% of the estates are involved in Organic or biodynamic agriculture accounting for 30% of the surface area, like Château des Estanilles.

FOOD AND WINE PAIRING

Faugeres reds are vintages that can already be enjoyed after 2 years. They will go wonderfully with game, cassoulet, lamb or tender cheeses such as Saint-Marcellin.

The Faugeres rosé is perfect as an aperitif or with a bouillabaisse.
