Nuits-Saint-Georges is situated in the Burgundy's sub-region of Côte de Nuits. The majority of wines produced here are reds made from Pinot Noir. A very small amount of white wine from Chardonnay is also produced. Nuits-Saint-Georges is the second largest appellation in the Côte d'Or. There are no Grands Crus, but many fine Premier Cru vineyards. The red wines are relatively powerful and complex showing beautiful leather, truffle and game notes when matured. Discover this appellation through Domaine Taupenot-Merme, Domaine de l'Arlot, Maison Albert Bichot or Maison Stéphane Brocard - La Closerie des Alisiers.

This 19th century French writer wrote about the wines of Nuits-Saint-Georges in his successful novel "Around the Moon". A passage in the book explains that "a fine bottle of Nuits" was chosen to celebrate "the union of the Earth and its satellite". The writer refers to this wine to thank Félix Tisserand, an astronomer born in Nuits-Saint-Georges, for giving him advice to give more credibility to his book From the Earth to the Moon. In homage to Jules Vernes, the crew of Appollo XV officially named a lunar hole "Crater Saint-Georges" on 25 July 1971.
In the second quatrain of his sonnet "Sed non satiata" (Never satisfied), 26th poem of the collection "Les Fleurs du mal", the French poet Charles Baudelaire refers to the wine Nuits-Saint-Georges:
❝ Rare wines or opium are less a prizen, than your moist lips where love struts its pavane; When my lusts move towards you in caravan, my ennuis drink from cisterns of your eyes. ❞
