The spicy grape variety from Corsica
Also called Sciaccarellu, Mammolo and Fegeri
A black grape variety thought to originate from Tuscany, where it is known as Mammolo and is used in the Chianti blends. The grape variety is however more famous in the French island of Corsica. It is the main variety of Ajaccio and Sartène appellations, where the granit soils do justice to the grape. It can be found as a monovarietal wine or blended with Niellucio (Sangiovese). It has good resistance to disease, and it buds and ripens late. Sciaccarello produces wines with moderate, soft tannins, red fruit, herbal and peppery aromas.
