XAVIER VIGNON

Xavier Vignon is one of the most renowned oenologists in the Rhone wine region. He has worked as a consultant to more than 200 wineries in the Rhone Valley and has gained a worldwide reputation for his expertise and collaboration on the best wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. He started his own production in 2002, and the winery is now known for wines of exceptional quality and Xavier Vignon's own style of wine, both of which make him a successful winemaker. Elegant and well-balanced wines that beautifully reflect the terroir, because terroir and minerality are the philosophy of his work and not only in wine production, as he also runs an oenological institute, where he explores these aspects. His wines obtain the highest scores in the Robert Parker Guide.

Xavier Vignon, creator of unparalleled wines

Focus on Xavier Vignon's career and talent. A rare phenomenon in the world of wine that astonishes the most experienced connoisseur while cultivating mystery.

Xavier Vignon, créateur de vin

a talent

An eminent consultant in the Southern Rhône Valley, Xavier Vignon works with freedom and conviction in the world of wine. Originally from Picardy, he devotes himself at a very young age to his passion, wine. Wherever he goes, this tireless worker thrives while having fun. In his early years, he followed his scientific studies as an agricultural engineer and biochemist and passed the National Diploma of Oenology (DNO) with flying colours. He obtained his first stripes in Bordeaux at Château Corbin-Michotte, Grand Cru Classé de Saint-Émilion and in Alsace, before extending his experience abroad, in California in the Nappa Valley, in New Zealand with the prestigious Cloudy Bay house and at Domaine Chandon Australia.

Xavier Vignon travels the world and is enriched by his winemaking adventures. On the strength of his experience, Moët & Chandon hired him as soon as he came back to France to benefit from his savoir-faire forged in many wineries abroad. But despite the career opportunities offered in champagne, he regained his independence in 1996, eager for freedom and above all decided to fulfil his penchant for the wines of the southern Rhône Valley.

So Xavier settled in Vaucluse at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail to start a fine career as a consulting oenologist in France and abroad, mainly in Australia, South Africa and California. He thus forged a solid international reputation by providing expert advice to more than 200 estates and by participating in the elaboration of prestigious Rhône wines, notably in Châteauneuf-du-Pape where he gradually implemented new working methods.

Discreet, in the shadow of many prestigious estates owners, without ever putting himself forward, Xavier Vignon became highly respected by his peers.

Weary of offering the best wines as an intermediary, little by little, he had the ambition to produce and share his own cuvees. Today that ambition is a reality!

A DISCREET WINE CREATOR WHO WAS QUICK IN GETTING HIMSELF NOTICED

Driven by sharing and the desire to forge links, Xavier Vignon puts his talent to work to create his own style. In the beginning, he designed the first cuvées for his friends in his garage. That is how he makes his ideal wine, without any constraints of terroir or grape variety. Thanks to his privileged position and his experience, he has the opportunity to access wines from world-renowned estates that are not offered to traditional wine merchants. Selective and attentive, he blends the "juice" from carefully selected plots with other more confidential but equally qualitative vintages.

In 2002, he began to sell his own vintage discreetly signed “Xavier Vins”. A business that gave up for a while in order to be able to carry out his two activities at the same time, since he accepted the challenge of taking over the management of the laboratory of the Institut Œnologique de Champagne un addition to his consulting activity.

Along the way, a friend of his, Jean-Pierre Hugues, suggested that he join forces to promote his creations in 2007: a way of reinforcing the existing structure. Xavier then gave birth to a new range of wines that Robert Parker had the curiosity to taste. Creations to which the famous critic attributed his highest marks!

His deep knowledge of the terroirs of the Rhône Valley combined with his audacious and visionary spirit surfaced in the wine world and little by little, Xavier could no longer go unnoticed

AN ACE AT WINE BLENDING

Located in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Beaumes de Venise, not far from renowned winegrowers, Xavier is best placed to produce elegant cuvees on these Southern Rhône lands. An inexhaustible playground, this is where he makes the most chiselled blends: resulting from the association of the different types of terroirs of each appellation, he guarantees the best possible balance. Its aim: to reveal the best of each appellation.

It all starts with the vine: the wines selected are always made from old, low-yielding vines.

And the last that can be said is that these unpretentious vintages, coming from domains recognized as small properties, reveal their assets!

The diversity of the Rhone Valley's terroirs, combined with the freedom offered by the small size of the structure, gives him a wide room to maneuver in his creations.

When he does not extract the quintessence of a terroir (since his range of wines can be found under the Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes-du-Rhône, Gigondas, Cairanne, Vacqueyras, Rasteau, Ventoux, Muscat Beaumes de Venise and Beaumes de Venise AOCs) he blends different vintages and appellations to produce some Vins de France with a disconcerting freedom in view of the quality of the vintages.

Xavier Vignon certainly blends, but adds a modern touch to the sincere expression of the Rhodanian terroirs. Each cuvée is the fruit of a meticulous work and a rigorous selection.

Gentle extraction, limiting inputs to the strict minimum: nothing to complain about, respect for the fruit is there! It rivals with talent in the precision of the maturing and the sublimation of Grenache, its favourite grape variety.

These creative vintages, each of which bears the expert's signature, make Xavier Vignon a unique phenomenon in the world of wine.

PRIVY TO MANY SECRETS

We may understand that Xavier Vignon likes to remain discreet and keeps his trade secrets. What counts is the content of the bottle and the pleasure of each person at the tasting. These blends of irreproachable quality without reaching the price of the great estates from which they come, and whose names are never divulged, could pass for “Unidentifiable Wine Objects”.

Xavier even plays it by cultivating a veil of mystery through the names of some of his vintages: "Anonymous" or those of the Arcanes saga "The Devil", "The Moon" and "The Sun" referring to the Tarot cards.

Mystery of creation, Xavier Vignon takes malicious pleasure in assembling and proves that he has many assets. His way of proceeding is innovative in the world of wine, almost visionary because it opens up the field of possibilities while respecting the appellations, out of love for the grape. A certain grain of madness and a lot of audacity!

Whether it be vintages from great estates or from more confidential domains, he knows how to keep the origin of his wines secret in order to honour only the nobility of the fruit, the concentration of the aromas, the power and the balance.

A requirement which is now the signature of a well-defined style.

The expert's lair, the Beaumes Au Coeur cellar located in Beaumes de Venise, is now known throughout the world for its wines of exceptional quality.

Several tens of thousands bottles are shipped abroad each year... Needless to say, those interested are making a good draw!
