The multiple owners of the Oban distillery through the years have all contributed to a tradition of hospitality and participation in the local community. This dates back to the brothers John and Hugh Stevenson, the founders not only of the Oban distillery but also the city itself. They were both from the region. Their mother had left Port Appin on the death of their father, a stonemason, to come and settle there. Together they founded a shipyard and a tannery, and in the 1790s a brewery which became the Oban distillery in 1794. The next two generations of Stevenson continued to look after the family interests in Oban. They remain a community driven distillery, which our own community on vinatis.co.uk can appreciate
