The Domaine de la Romanée Conti is a mythical estate located on an exceptional terroir from which come the greatest wines of Burgundy , France and the world! A family estate, the mission of the generations of winegrowers who have succeeded one another is to develop highly coveted Grands Crus . This is a major mission, since benefiting from an exceptional vineyard is one thing, but the winegrower must also know how to bring out the best in the terroir, in order to make the greatest wines.
In Burgundy, viticulture has been practised for more than 2,000 years since the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits were already producing wines to satisfy the Roman and Gallo-Roman wine lovers of the time. The latter had already understood that this region was endowed with fabulous terroirs. A desire to identify the wines by their origin was then manifested within the informed connoisseurs. This desire gave rise to the famous Burgundy climats, that are well-defined plots of land and vines. Burgundy has more than a hundred climats, of which less than 1% of all the wines produced are Grands Crus. The climats of the Grands Crus are far from having been delimited by chance. They have the best soils and ideal climatic conditions. Their geographical and geological dispositions enable them to ensure optimal ripening of the grapes, vintage after vintage, even in the event of meteorological excesses.
The acquisition of this prestigious name dates back to the 18th century, more precisely in 1760 when Louis François de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, acquired Romanée. These Burgundian parcels were already known and renowned for producing exceptional wines. For the Prince of Conti, becoming master of these vines was a dream come true. Fascinated by the magnificent wines produced on these lands, Louis François de Bourbon bought the estate for ten times the price of Clos de Bèze, another highly prized and sought-after Burgundy Grand Cru.
It was his son Louis-François Joseph, Prince of Conti and Count of La Marche, who took over the property on his father's death. A victim of the Revolution, he lost his title of owner and retired to Spain where he ended his life. Although the wine estate was sold as 'national property', the name 'Conti' remained and has survived the ages. Today, the Conti name remains in one place, on the Côtes d'Or land where unique wines are made.
The pressure is great for the winegrowers of the Domaine de la Romanée Conti, whose administration is today divided between two large families, of which Aubert de Villaine and Leroy family are the representatives. It is the winegrower's duty to know how to reveal the full potential of a terroir. A climat is alive, rich in a precise and fragile dynamic that must be respected and preserved. This is the duty of the winegrowers who today run the estate, whose plots of land are spread over eight prestigious appellations:
The Domaine de la Romanée Conti cuvées are made from all the AOCs it cultivates with a view to respecting the soil and the natural conditions of the climat. These wines are of the highest quality, in keeping with their richness and reputation. This maintenance is essential to the Domaine de la Romanée Conti, as are rigour, attention to detail, mastery of practices at each stage of the wine-making process, meticulousness, patience and humility.
