The Château Palais Cardinal vineyard, located in the town of Saint Sulpice de Faleyrens, extends south of Saint- Emilion , crossed by the “La Fuie” stream which drains its land. The exploitation of the vines dates from 1850. The property was then known under the name of Château Moulin de Cassagne 1er Cru Saint-Emilion. In 1947, Mr. Fretier became the owner of the vineyard. He then named it Château Palais Cardinal, due to the location of his cellar established in the outbuildings of the Palais Cardinal. This prestigious historic residence of Saint-Emilion built in the 12th century, and whose vestiges still appear near the old Porte Bourgeoise at the northern entrance of Saint-Emilion, echoes the Cardinal de Sainte Luce - Gaillard de la Mothe -, nephew of the Archbishop of Bordeaux, Bertrandde Goth, who became the famous Pope Clement V at the beginning of the 14th century. The latter then granted his nephew his title of Cardinal as well as a luxurious and comfortable residence known today as the “Cardinal Palace”. In 2008, the property passed into the hands of the Texier family who, for 10 years, worked on its renovation and expansion. It was in May 2018 that the Ballande family acquired this lovely estate, which, supported by an experienced team and the expertise of Thomas Duclos, now manages this farm, whose quality potential is undeniable through its quality. of its land and the people who work it.
