The name Cape Mentelle is closely associated with Margaret River, a region at the south-western tip of Western Australia, the country's largest state. It refers to the Mentelle brothers, two French explorers who travelled along these shores around 1800. When David Hohnen founded the estate in 1970, the reputation of the wines from this region, far removed from the administrative and economic heartland of the country, was entirely undeveloped but the potential was extraordinarily promising. Cape Mentelle quickly became one of the most refined and "European" estates in Australia, thanks in particular to its Cabernet Sauvignon, which is distinguished by its complexity and finesse.
