MACAN 2016 - BENJAMIN DE ROTHSCHILD & VEGA SICILIA

0,75 L Red Wine / Spain / Catalonia / Rioja DO / 14 % vol / 100% Tempranillo

"This could very well be the finest vintage of Macán so far." Robert Parker
This Macán saw a new plot vinification with the introduction of a new winery. The Tempranillo comes from selected vineyards on 92 hectares; fermented in wooden vats and aged in 4,000 liter barrels (50% new wood) for around 16 months and has been bottled for three years before being marketed. The desired style is perfectly achieved, it is a wine with density and freshness. 2016 was the first year in which the wine was vinified and aged from start to finish in the new cellar, which would have made it possible to better control the fermentation. The estate is trying to obtain wines with more tension and less power and oakiness than at the beginning.

BODEGAS VEGA SICILIA

For Spain's most famous estate, the story began in 1848, when Toribio Lecanda, a Basque, bought a vast 2000 ha estate near the Douro River from the Marquis de Valbuena. Above all land of cattle and orchards, it became a winegrower in 1864 when his son brought back a few vines from Bordeaux. Wealthy owners will follow one another without anybody making Vega Sicilia a commercial affair: the wine, considered the finest in Spain since the 1920s, first contributed to the prestige of its owner. The Alvarez family acquired it in 1982, and has done everything to reinforce the myth, and you still have to show your credentials to acquire a few precious allocations of the estate's legendary Vega Sicilia Unico.
