CARINYENA BLANCA 2019 - FAMÍLIA NIN ORTIZ

0,75 L White Wine / Spain / Catalonia / Priorat / 13 % vol / 100% Carignan blanc

"A unique aromatic profile (...) an ample palate without in any way losing freshness (... ) A rare cuvée" R. Parker
An expert wine of which only 3000 bottles are produced. The Cariñena Blanca is now finally considered a permitted grape in the Priorat appellation, thanks to the Nin-Ortiz family. To maintain good acidity, they used plant material found in the oldest plots in the region to graft the 100 plants in their Planetes property and, after the first test, they grafted another 100. The result is stunning as it can maintain superb freshness even in a warm year. Once harvested, the grapes were pressed and left to macerate in their skins for 24 hours (as with an orange wine) and the juice was fermented in 300-litre oak casks with (naturally occurring) indigenous yeasts for between 40 and 180 days. The wine is then aged for 10 months in wood. On the nose, we find a wine that combines strength and finesse. Thanks to its natural vinification with neither additives nor added sulphite, it acquires an amplitude that magnifies the footprint of its terroir after 2 hours of aeration in the carafe. Warning: it may surprise those who are not initiated into "natural wines". This wine needs time to express itself and open up. We do not recommend it for an uninitiated audience. This Carignan Blanc single varietal is balanced by crisp acidity that elevates it and gives it definition. It is completed by a long, delicately-scented and saline finish. Here is a white Priorat without equal.

FAMÍLIA NIN ORTIZ

The young Catalan Bodega Família Nin-Ortiz is located in Porrera, in the south-west of Priorat, about 130 km from Barcelona. Ester Nin, certified biologist and oenologist, and Carles Ortiz, oenologist from Barcelona, got married in 2008 and merged their respective vineyards. A pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in the Priorat region, the couple are dedicated to growing grapes close to nature and respectful of the environment. The Priorat is omnipresent in their vines: there are plots on relatively wild hillsides facing north, the famous 'Llicorella' terroir (black schist) and vines, the oldest of which are 110 years old. All these assets make it possible to create wines with an intense fruity and mineral dimension. Ester and Carles produce very particular cuvées in limited editions which are among the greatest wines in the world. With 13 hectares spread between 400 and 650 meters above sea level, the small farm is one of the highest in Priorat. The grape varieties include Garnacha, Garnacha Peluda, Cariñena, Cariñena Blanca, Roussanne, Marsanne, Chenin Blanc and Parellada Montonegra. For some time now, the bodega has belonged to Eric Solomon's European Cellars group, which was nominated in 2002 by the Parker guide as "the wine personality of the year" and allows the very specific wines signed Família Nin-Ortiz to reach more Priorat enthusiasts.
