The Spanish Gaja family settled in Piedmont in 1859 on the Langhe hills. 5 generations have followed one another, and since 1961 Angelo Gaja has been at the head of a property which covers an area of 100 hectares. The latter has greatly contributed to the fame of Barbaresco and Barolo. In 1967, Angelo Gaja was the first to use French barrels in Piedmont to vinify Nebbiolo on separately cultivated parcels. Then over the years, Angelo Gaja will acquire different estates: the Pieve Santa Restituta estate in Montalcino in Tuscany, he then buys Azienda Agrigola Gromis, in La Morra in the Barolo area on the Cerequio terroir, he finally acquires Ca 'Marcanda in Castagneto Carducci in Tuscany. Angelo Gaja is a rigorous and charismatic man, which has allowed him to promote his wines around the world. Elected in 1998, "man of the year" by Decanter magazine, he is recognized worldwide as the best producer of wines in Italy.
